School of the Incarnation Mission Statement

The School of the Incarnation embraces an inter-parish community of children with differing gifts. Through collaboration amongst the faculty, parents and other professionals, the School seeks to challenge and support a diversity of learning styles and needs and to nurture a spiritual, intellectual, physical, social and emotional wholeness in its students. With a commitment to professional and catechist development for its faculty and staff, the School of the Incarnation will continue to be grounded in a spirit of openness, rooted in Gospel values and to be attuned to the evolving pedagogy of education. Through instruction, faith formation and Gospel proclamation, students will be called to a greater understanding of their inherent responsibility, as Children of God, to actively participate in a global and technologically advanced society as instruments of justice in the world.

A note from the Principal . . . Dear Parents and Guardians: As we move into the season of Advent, let me thank you for sharing the gift of your children with our community! Enjoy the blessings of the season and the joy of your families. I look forward to sharing the many events of the Christmas season with each of you. May the birth of Christ fill your hearts with the true peace, hope and love of this holy season! Merry Christmas!

  • f year and we need to allow them to express their generosity. One

special way to get involved in the spirit of giving is to get involved in the Giving Back initiative. Through prayer and the sharing of faith traditions such as the Advent wreath and Jesse Tree we will ready our hearts to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Advent prayers and

Adoration During Advent

What better time than Advent to devote some time to the practice

  • f Adoration? The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the

chapel from 8:45am until 4pm during Advent on December 2nd and

  • 20th. Classes will visit throughout the day so that there is a

constant presence. The chapel will be open from 2:15-4pm on these days for parents and/or families. Please consider sharing this tradition with your children after school or taking a few minutes with the Lord before you pick up children for dismissal. If you are planning on staying after school for Adoration, we ask that you select a parking spot that will not interfere with the flow of the dismissal process.

School Embarks on Revised Master Plan

Developed many years ago, the original master plan for School of the Incarnation included plans for Church of the Holy Apostles. Over time, these plans have changed and the needs of our students and school have changed as well. To support these changes, our school leadership, in consultation with the Archdiocese of Baltimore, will embark on the development of a new master plan. The architectural and planning firm, Gaudreau, Inc. has been commissioned to lead this planning process. As discussed at our recent parent meeting, the first steps include gathering stakeholder

  • feedback. All parents, staff members and our older students will

be asked to participate in a survey to gather input to guide our planning process. Look for this survey in the week ahead.

Annual Gala- Save the Date!

The annual School of the Incarnation Spring Gala will be held on Friday, April 28th at Holy Family Church in Davidsonville. Christmas decorating is SUPPOSED to be fun family time!” Those were the words that I growled last weekend as I called my husband away from his tablet to help and ordered my children to stop bickering about where the angels should be set up in the

  • house. That got me thinking, how DO we keep Jesus, and our

values code, at the center of our holiday season? Of course there were some immediate pangs of guilt, “I should be peacefully humming carols to myself as I gently remind the children that it doesn’t matter where the angels go.” “I should take my family to serve at a food pantry every week during advent.” “We should pray the whole rosary daily during advent.” However, after a deep breath, I realized that it is in small steps that big changes are made. This month, I challenge you (and me) to take some small steps that may shift some focus. Here are some ideas:

 Talk about what life must have been like when Jesus was born and how amazingly selfless Mary was to say yes to God. How

Guidance Corner HSA News

slide-5
SLIDE 5

can we say yes to God and help others – think small and be realistic.  Talk about who has helped us? What did they do (or not do) that helped – sometimes just being a good listener can be helpful!  Start some daily goals (children and parents) that align to our values code of Integrity, Initiative, and Inclusion such as “I can practice showing initiative by holding the door for others today.” Or “I can have integrity by saying thank you every time someone serves me or helps me today.” Then, check in at dinner to see how it went.  Talk about the morning offering prayer at school, and how we can keep in mind that “We are always and everywhere in the presence of God.” Think about something that happened in the day where you might have done something differently if you had that concept in your mind.  Set aside your spare change for the month, then decide as a family what charity to donate it to.

After all, when we practice we improve at a skill, and what better skill to improve than appreciating God’s presence in our lives? Sarah Spaulding, LCPC School Counselor

Does Differentiation Really Make a Difference?

If you were invited to attend a seminar, or even better - if you chose a seminar that was of particular interest to you, how would you go about processing the information? Would you sit in the front row, wide-eyed and ready to listen? Would you have a note- pad and your favorite fine tipped pen or set of pens to take notes or maybe even doodle with while you’re listening? Would you have your IPAD ready to record? Would you hope that a link to the presentation was going to be sent to you? Or maybe there’s another way that is of your own doing! As adults, we have hopefully discovered what strategy works best for us in varying situations. Children, however, might know this intrinsically, but need to learn how to apply their unique style to become the best learners they can be. This is where differentiation comes into play in our classrooms. Teachers, in collaboration with parents and previous teachers of the child, try to determine what kind of learner your child is - visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc. and then offer different learning modalities to support that style. For instance, let’s say that in the classroom all students were just presented with 8 new vocabulary words for a particular subject (content). In process differentiation, some children might decide to make flash cards for those words using the dictionary. Some may choose to work together while others are working independently to discover meanings. There might be someone who decides to sketch the words, while another makes a web with different concept ideas about the word. Some might choose to work from the standard workbook. Then, to demonstrate mastery

  • f those words, product differentiation, students might be

presented with various options such as writing a story using the words, give verbal answers to riddles, fill in the blanks on an IPAD, make a “test” for another student to take, or add to a personal dictionary with definitions and/or sketches and connections to other words. Differentiated instruction is responsive to student readiness, interest, and approach to learning. (Carol Ann Tomlinson 2014) When we differentiate learning process and product, we are recognizing the uniqueness of each learner and our classrooms are responsive and student centered as opposed to uniform and static. So...does differentiation make a difference? Ask your child which type of learning they prefer! We are so fortunate in this day and age to have all the different medications to help stave off disease and illness. But this doesn’t mean every time we get sick we should take these medicines. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) just kicked off a public awareness campaign last month called “Get Smart about Antibiotics”. During this cold and flu season I thought it would be helpful to share some information taken directly from this CDC campaign so you can be more informed about when antibiotics can help and when symptom relief might be a better focus. Here’s what I found… GET SMART ABOUT ANTIBIOTICS Improving antibiotic use starts with you! Using antibiotics wisely is the best way to ensure they work for future bacterial illnesses and prevent unnecessary side effects. Here are tips for how to use antibiotics wisely (Hint: It starts with preventing infections in the first place):

 Keep up with vaccinations. Vaccinations help prevent infections that may require antibiotics and helps prevent diseases from spreading. 

  • Handwashing. Washing your hands is one of the best ways to

keep yourself and your family healthy by preventing the spread

  • f germs that cause infections.

 Ask about symptom relief. Never pressure your healthcare professional for antibiotics, instead ask for the best treatment for your illness. Talk to your healthcare professional or pharmacist about how to relieve symptoms so that you can feel better.  Only take antibiotics for infections caused by bacteria. Illnesses caused by viruses, like the common cold and the flu, do not improve with antibiotics. Using antibiotics when they are not needed can cause harmful side effects and make antibiotics less powerful against certain bacteria.  Ask if watchful waiting is right for you. Even some bacterial infections, like mild sinus and ear infections, can get better without antibiotics. For some illnesses, your healthcare professional may recommend watchful waiting, meaning waiting a few days to see if you get better before deciding to prescribe antibiotics.  Ask about side effects. Talk to your healthcare professional or pharmacist about potential side effects of antibiotics.  Take antibiotics exactly as prescribed. Even if you feel better, do not skip doses or stop taking an antibiotic early without approval from your healthcare professional.  Throw leftover antibiotics away. Never save antibiotics for future illnesses, take antibiotics prescribed for others, or share antibiotics with others. Talk to your pharmacist about how to dispose of leftover antibiotics.  Visit cdc.gov/getsmart to learn more about using antibiotics wisely.

Wishing you and yours the best holiday season ever with many blessings! Warmest regards, Sue Toth, RN - School Nurse

New Family Referral Program

Our current Incarnation families are by far the best ambassadors for spreading the word about our school! Our New Family Referral Program rewards current families with a one-time $250 tuition credit for referring a new family who applies and enrolls. Here’s how it works:  If you know of a family that you believe may be interested in School of the Incarnation, complete the “New Family Referral Form” below and submit to the school office.  Reach out to the family and share your experiences at School of the Incarnation. Share with them the reasons you have chosen Catholic education and why you think they should do the same. Let them know that you have or will refer their information to the school and that an admissions representative will call or email them to provide more information.  For each new family that applies and enrolls at least one full-time student, a $250 tuition credit will be awarded to the current referring family after the new student has been in attendance for 30 days.  Siblings of current students and previously enrolled students do not qualify as new families. Staff members are not eligible for the referral credit.  Note that this form must be on file in the front office before the new family has contacted the school on their own for information or to visit so it is best to submit the form as soon as possible after speaking with the new family. In other words, the referral form is not retroactive and you are not eligible for the referral if the family contacts school before the referral.  This referral program is open to all families with students currently enrolled in PreK4-Grade 8.  Families may earn no more than one referral fee in any academic year.
