2019 Essex Closed Squash The 48th Essex County Closed Squash Championships at Club Kingswood in January saw the most entries ever for an Essex Closed Event (163) Biggest prize pot ever (£3000) Most matches played (193). Richie Fallows, made it three wins out of three defeating long-standing rival, Ben Coleman, and Elise Lazarus, claimed her second County Closed by defeating junior rival, Alice Green. Essex Squash57 2018-2019 Competitions: County SQ57 Singles Championships on Sunday 7th April at The Woodford Wells Club. There were over 40 competitors, 16 in the O50’s, from 10 clubs chasing the 6 titles on offer Inter-County: off the back of the Essex Closed we entered 3 teams (Men, Women, O50) into the inter-county championships in Nottingham in June. Essex came away as the National O50 Champions, congratulations to Patrick Osborn, Marc Thornley, Fred Cooke, Pascual Dibattista & Paul Fennell. A big thank you to the captains Daniel Weights, Zoe Fennell and Patrick Osborn for all their organization effort.

Nationals: December Essex players went to Nottingham to play in the National Doubles and came away with 4 of the 6 titles:

  • Women - Amber Marshall & Zoe Fennell
  • Mixed - Zoe Fennell & Patrick Osborn
  • Men O40 - Marc Thornley & Adam Grilli
  • Men O50 - Marc Thornley & Patrick Osborn

Essex also had players at the National Squash57 Singles at Edgbaston Priory - Patrick Osborn was RU in the O55’s.

Essex Squash57 2019-2020 There has interest expressed in trying to re-establish an Essex sq57 League but given the limited number of clubs stepping forward and the likely contention with squash matches we are discussing possible alternatives e.g.:

  • Setting up periodic (quarterly?) club challenge events.
  • With the National Squash57 Doubles being in December it

probably makes sense to run an Essex Squash57 Doubles competition in the build up to that.

Full Junior activity included in the county report: END OF SEASON REPORT 2018/2019 EJS has worked extremely hard and continued to build on a structure that has seen the introduction of an increased number of new juniors to Essex Squash playing inter county and Essex GP events.

  • County Trials – Open to any young player and identified an

additional 44 players for development training.

  • Development Squads – 4 training squads at 4 different clubs had 80

players involved, an increase of 14% from last season.

  • County Squads – 4 main training squads with a total of 138 juniors

involved in county coaching/training from which our Inter County

  • Grand Prix Series – 5th season, with 8 events around the county

aimed at giving players from school year 10 and below their first taste

  • f competitive squash -133 juniors took part. The success of this

competition has meant that we will again run 8 events next season.

  • Essex Junior Closed - held in September with 120 competitors (an

increase of 22% on last year) and saw the introduction of Under 9 categories for the first time.

  • Essex Junior Open – 120 players entered from 9 counties. Essex

won the BU11, BU13, BU17 & BU19, GU9, GU11, GU13 & GU19 our best haul for 2 years by Essex players.

  • Rankings - 98 of Essex players featuring in the National lists. Essex

has 9 boys in the top 20 across all age categories, girls have 11 players in the Top 20 across all age categories.

  • Inter- County Competition/Trophy Finals - EJS we were able to

field 11 teams in the National Competition with 7 teams making it through to main finals and 3 teams making the trophy finals.

  • National finals - BU15 finished 3rd, GU15 finished 6th, GU19 A

finished 7th, GU19 B finished 8th, BU13 finished 5th, BU17 finished 5th and the GU13A finished 3rd.

  • Trophy Finals - GU13B finished 3rd, BU19 finished 2nd and the

GU17 finished 2nd. Essex were the third largest county just behind Surrey and Yorkshire, 2019/2020 will see an increase in participation by Essex Teams.

  • Inter-County Friendlies – The Southern and Eastern Counties

Grand Prix series is another initiative of EJS which allowing B team inter county friendlies, with 3 rounds involving Essex, Kent, Surrey and Middlesex. Essex had winners in all categories during the course

  • f the season with overall win for Essex in the U11 category, second

places in the U13 and U15’s and third place in the U17’s. A further programme of three rounds is planned for next season. Sponsorship & Funding - Many Thanks to:

  • Platinum sponsorship package from Mills Smith Insurance Group.
  • 200 Club provides a steady revenue stream to backup sponsorship.
  • Funding from England Squash via East Regional Forum of £1340

towards Player Development and Fund raising.

The Future 2019/2020 will see increase in the number of players at Inter County and Development training, the number of teams competing at National IC level, growth of a Southern & Eastern GP series, expanded Miles Smith Essex GP series and introduction of inaugural Eastern Counties Super Six Series This will see results from half-a-dozen England sanctioned events in and around Essex, Suffolk and Hertfordshire areas count towards a season long competition, an idea sanctioned by England Squash themselves. The Committee of Essex Junior Squash will continue to look at growing the sport in our County as well as representing Essex to the highest level nationally. David Harris – EJS Competitions Secretary

  • 2018/19 only one R&M Workshop was run involving Essex League

Teams which is very disappointing. This was at Southgate SC. Seven candidates attended and five were successful in

  • btaining their Club Grade Referee status.
  • A further R&M Workshop is planned at Gidea Park in July/August.

Essex Squash & Racketball Association New Efforts Several new adult events run by Niall Engerer at David Lloyd Gidea Park, Woodford Wells and Brentwood Centre together with newly qualified coach Alex King Super Series Finals night at St George’s Hill Club in Surrey was a truly memorable and successful occasion. Nick Matthews held one of his farewell tour exhibition nights at David Lloyd Gidea Park in January – which was also well attended and appreciated.

Essex Squash & Racketball Association Another “new” initiatives was the first Secondary Schools Squash Tournament held at the University of Essex in May. (Ideally an annual event and should feature in the Essex School Games competition). To expose the sport to new players 160 year 9 (14+) students attended Outreach work sessions held at Tendring Tech, Thurstable High School and Plume Academy. As a result of the above after school Satellite Squash clubs have started at Park Drive Maldon, Tiptree Sports Centre and Frinton Tennis & Squash Club, funded through Active Essex.

Essex Squash & Racketball Association Outreach schools work has also taken place at the Earls Colne Primary School for years 1 to 5. This resulted in a new junior section starting at the Earls Colne Rec Club coached by newly qualified Russell Haythorpe and it is growing weekly!
