AP and DE: An Overview

 Similarities:

 Both are college-level courses, with rigor beyond that

  • f a standard or advanced-level class

 Both provide a weighted credit, boosting a student’s

GPA significantly

 Both can yield college credit upon course completion,

at a drastically reduced cost when compared to standard tuition rates

 Both are viewed extremely favorably by admissions

staff at competitive colleges and universities

 Offer tuition/fee reductions for low income students

AP and DE: An Overview

 Differences…AP classes:

 Are not tied to a particular college, but are administered

through the College Board

 Are tuition-free  Yield college credits through an end-of-course exam

(generally priced around $92)

 Colleges and universities set individual policies on

awarding credits for AP exams

AP and DE: An Overview

 Differences…DE classes:

 Are tied to Germanna Community College  Are priced at around $55 per credit (roughly $330 for a

full-year course awarding 6 college credits)

 Yield college credits automatically as long as

students maintain a “C” average

 Public college and universities in Virginia must honor

transfer credits (out-of-state and private schools are not required to do so)

What can AP/DE do for you?

 How much money did Johnny potentially save by

taking those two AP/DE classes?

 Virginia Tech awards Johnny 6 English credits based on

his AP exam score and 6 History credits for completing his DE course with a “C” average or higher.

 AP Exam fee ($92) + DE Tuition ($330) = $422 paid by Johnny’s

family

 Virginia Tech in-state tuition ($449.46 per credit hour) x 12

credits = $5,393.52 paid by Johnny’s family

 Johnny’s family saves over $4,971

slide-7
SLIDE 7

What can you buy with $4,971?

 A new washer, dryer, refrigerator, microwave, and toaster  165 12-gallon tanks (4-6 years worth) of gasoline  4,971 individual items from Family Dollar  9,952 USPS postage stamps

 …the possibilities are endless

CHS Teachers on AP/DE

 “Students need to be in the habit of applying lecture material and

theories into practical application exercises. Students need to understand that with higher level courses come higher level thinking

  • pportunities that will produce higher level project designs.”
  • Mr. Cornelius Black, DE Engineering Design and DE

Architecture Design

CHS Teachers on AP/DE

 “Successful (AP/DE) students are self motivated and able to keep up

with assignments outside of class. They also are interested in the subject and try to explore the issues on a deeper level in their assignments and class discussions.”

  • Mrs. Amy Tillapaugh, AP United States Government and

DE Humanities

 “The most successful of my students are intrinsically motivated. They

are curious and ask questions--of themselves, of the text, of me. My class prepares students to learn independently. They practice reading to learn. Not everything can be covered in class discussion or

  • lecture. Some of the material is covered in required readings, just like

college.”

  • Mr. David Lewis, DE United States History
