Option 1| Rebuild both Taylor MS & Warrenton MS

How much will it cost? How long will it take to complete? 7.25 years $98 million

Current capacity between the two schools is 1,092

Replace both schools at 650 capacity each

After the new Taylor is built, move Warrenton students into current Taylor MS during construction

  • f Warrenton. If Warrenton would be rebuilt first,

students would have to be housed in portables (a significant disruption and cost)

Rebuild Taylor MS first

There would likely be some Middle School boundary changes to best utilize both schools

Consider boundary adjustments

Executive Summary| Recommendations

Based on the community and Advisory Committee feedback on the background data and options development, the recommendation proceeding from this process is to create a consolidated middle school

  • n the Taylor site. Considering similar community

preferences for the 1,000-capacity middle school without an Auburn addition and a 900-capacity middle school with an addition, the consultant team believes it in the best interest of the process to simply recommend a consolidated middle school on the Taylor site and provide the FCPS School Board with the benefits and challenges of these two options along with community feedback.

Advisory Committee Meeting #4| Activity

slide-24
SLIDE 24

24

Advisory Committee Meeting #4| Design Exercise #1

1. What are the 10 most important aspects of the new school’s design that you think should be included? They do not need to be in order of priority. 2. Design a classroom that you would like to see in your new school that is still operating twenty years from now. This can be described verbally or in sketch format. Feel free to show adjacent building features or spaces as necessary to convey your thoughts. 3. Describe the site for the new school. What components are needed and what are the most important aspects of the site design? Address parking, site egress, playfields and other concerns you may have. 4. The media center of tomorrow is not the media center of yesterday. It is in a state of transformation from a more static environment to a more active and multi-use space. Describe the new school’s media center. What new elements might be included? What traditional elements should remain or be excluded? 5. Discuss the kind of assembly area needed. This is a critical question in both functionality and cost in the design of a new school. Do we need a large group space such as a dedicated auditorium with sloped floor and fixed seats? Do we need a smaller assembly space or mini- auditorium to seat 100 to 150? Should that space have fixed seats, open tiers with loose seating, flat floor? Should a cafetorium or gymtorium be used to get the most flexibility and maximum usage of the space? Which of these or what combination of these is needed and why? 6. If you could think of things that would just make a school a fun place to be in, what would you include?

slide-25
SLIDE 25

25

Advisory Committee Meeting #4| Design Exercise #2

7. Discuss the health and physical fitness components of the school (building, not site). What features and attributes should be included for gym(s), lockers/restrooms, storage, seating, equipment, programs, etc.? 8. Describe ways in which the design can positively affect community engagement and allow the sharing of school facilities while being sensitive to safety, security and ongoing school activities. 9. Discuss administrative, guidance and clinic areas of the building. What are the critical thoughts about the design that you would like to share?

  • 10. What are your thoughts on the most ideal arrangement for the kitchen and cafeteria? What key features or qualities would you like to see

in the new building? Include your thoughts on student awareness of food and nutrition.

  • 11. Discuss the building systems, maintenance and energy goals and objectives for the building and site. What are the most important things

to include?

  • 12. If your school’s design could be used as a teaching tool, what kind of features might be included to help students learn just by being in the

school or on the site?
