The 90s marked with unprecedented volume of migratory flows
- 1988 earthquake - more than 500.000 environmental
migrants
- 1989-1990 the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict - 420,000
refugees from Azerbaijan
- IDPs - more than 72 000 people
- 90s economic blockade and harsh social conditions - more
than 1 million people

Emigration Two surveys recorded increase in outflow volumes:
2013-2015 - about 35 thousand people per year on
average
2007-2012 - 30 thousand people

Main destinations
- Russia
- 2007-2012 - there was an increase from 89,4% to
94,6% in comparison with 2002-2007 – 76,4%
- other countries (CIS, USA and European countries) –
decrease from 10,6% to 5,4%

Reasons for Departure
- 8 cases out of 10 are employment-related
- 14.5% of trips were related to family circumstances (family
reunification, marriage, divorce, etc.) The main sphere of employment Construction, almost 60% of cases in 2013, 56.75% in 2007 Reasons for return 34.7% - family reunification 22.2% - other family issues 15.0% - reached the goal abroad

Immigration The vast majority of those granted temporary or permanent residency status are foreign citizens of Armenian origin in the last 5-6 years . Foreigners - 4.2%. Reasons education - 41% ( mainly from Iran and India) family reunification - 30,1% (mainly from Russia) employment - 23,7% (mainly from Iran) enterprenurship - 0,17% (mainly from Iran)
