Why English Preparatory Class?

› To reach an English proficiency level which will be helpful to succeed in English medium departments › To be able to understand articles and books in English › To be able to take notes, listen to and understand lessons in English. › To be able to answer questions in English in the midterm and final exams in both the written and oral form. › To be able to communicate in English with other students and academic staff.

2- GENERAL SCHOOL AND CLASSROOM RULES

› Students must strictly obey the rules about class hours. › For morning classes only, students with a valid excuse have the flexibility to come 5 minutes late to the first lesson. › Instructors have the right to not allow late students in after the first 5 minutes have passed. › One class hour is 45 minutes followed by a ten-minute break. › Instructors are not allowed to have block hours. It’s not possible to offer block hours.

2- DURING THE LESSON

› Students are expected to bring all materials such as books, notebooks, dictionaries, etc. to class. › Students are NOT allowed to use cell phones, earphones, MP3 players, etc. › When necessary, cell phones can be used in the classroom for educational purposes, but ONLY with the approval of the instructor.

2- DURING THE LESSON

› Students are not allowed to bring any kind of food to class except for water. › Misbehaviours should be avoided in the classroom.

3- ATTENDANCE

› In the foreign language preparatory year, class attendance is compulsory. › Students are obliged to attend at least 80% of the lessons for each level. › Students have the right not to attend 20% (at most) of the total number of class hours for each level. › The absenteeism limit varies according to each level’s total class hours. › The total absenteeism of the entire academic year is taken into consideration for the AGE (Assessment in General English) exam held in January and June. › If students exceed the absenteeism limit for the entire year, they will NOT be allowed to take the AGE exam in January and June. (This is not valid for AGE exam in August and September.)

3- ATTENDANCE

› Students who do not meet the attendance conditions without an excuse accepted by the Directorate are regarded as unsatisfactory and repeat the level they are in. › While health reports do not count as excuses for absenteeism, they are accepted as an excuse for midterm exams only. Students can take the make-up exam only if a health report was provided. › The students who exceed the level absenteeism limit cannot take the final exam.

› Students are recorded as “absent” if they miss class without a providing a valid, accepted excuse. › Attendance is taken every class hour by the instructors. › The instructor does not have the authority to excuse student absences. › Every student is expected to keep track of his own absences.

4- DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES

› If necessary, the instructor has the authority to start disciplinary procedures against any disobedient student. › Those students who directly or indirectly restrict the freedom of learning and teaching or who violate the peace and order of the classroom will be punished according to institution regulations.

C) Cheating

If necessary, the instructor has the authority to start disciplinary procedures against any disobedient student. Cheating in any form is not tolerated. If a student is found cheating or attempting to cheat during an exam, the instructor shall give the student a ‘0’ grade or reduce their grade.

› When the instructor does not come to class, a substitute instructor will teach. › Attendance will be checked by this substitute instructor. Students should inform the Directorate if either their instructor

4- LEVEL PROGRESSION

A) Levels

› Students attending the English preparatory year program will be placed into 7-week levels according to the results of The Proficiency Exam and/or Placement Exam as follows:

2) Level Progression

› Students need to get a score of at least 64.5 from the assessment criteria in order to move on to the next level. › Students who do not attend classes regularly and/or cannot get the necessary score will repeat the same level.

3) Repeating the Level

› New classes are arranged for repeat students. › Different books are covered in repeat classes. › The Blended Learning program is offered for second-year students in the preparatory school. Attendance is obligatory for these classes.

✓Midterms may include sections covering reading, listening, writing, vocabulary, grammar and/or speaking. Each level will take 2 midterm exams –Midterm I and Midterm II. ✓ There are no classes on midterm days. ✓ Students arriving more than 30 minutes late are NOT allowed to take the exam. ✓Students are allowed to see their evaluated midterm papers. ✓ Students have one class hour to look over their exam paper and solve any possible problems with their instructors.

✓In case of any dispute, students are obliged to convey their written

• bjections personally to the Administration of Foreign Languages

within five working days at the latest. ✓Students who do not take midterm exams will receive a “0” grade on the midterm exam unless the following TWO conditions are met:

✓The student has a medical report of at least 5 days in length given by a state hospital or a university hospital of Health Ministry or an officially documented valid excuse. ✓Students MUST submit the above specified documentation to the school secretariat within 5 days of said documentation’s expiration date.

✓ Make-up exams are given to students whose excuses are accepted. The date of the make-up exam is announced before the end of the period. ✓ There are no make-ups for the make-up exam.

1- Midterm (Vize)

It is possible to find midterm and proficiency exam samples on the school’s website.

✓Quiz dates, as well as midterm dates, are announced at the beginning

• f the period.

✓Generally, quizzes do not last more than thirty minutes. ✓Quizzes are only given to students present in class at the announced hour of the announced day. Students who are more than 5 minutes late cannot take the quiz. ✓There are no make-ups for quizzes. Students who do not take the quiz get a “0” (zero). Medical reports are not accepted as excuses for quizzes. ✓National athletes or students commissioned by Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University are regarded as excused while performing or practicing for any activities in which they represent our country and/or the university. Quizzes given at that time are not calculated in their average.

2- Quizzes

A student’s activity score is given by his instructor(s). Activity score includes written tasks, oral presentations, speaking tasks, discussion/research tasks, student portfolios and online homework.

C) EXAMS

› 1) Placement Exam (YDDS) › It is conducted to assess the basic English knowledge and skills of all students registered at AYBU. › Students must take the YDDS exam to determine if that student has the right to take the YDMS exam and/or to determine what level of preparatory classes the student will start in. › Students who achieve a score of 60/100 or higher from the YDDS have the right to take YDMS. Students who get a score lower than 60 are placed as following in the preparatory program: › 0-39/100: A (Basic) 79.5-100/100: B (Independent) › 39.5-79/100: A+ (Basic+)

✓The AGE is administered four times in an academic year: Spring, Fall, at the beginning of the academic year, and after the end of the summer course. These exams are prepared and administered by the AYBU School of Foreign Languages. ✓First year students who complete level B with a score of 79.5

• r higher or who complete level B+ successfully are eligible to

take the AGE in the Spring and Fall. ✓All students can take Proficiency at the beginning of the Academic Year (September) and Summer Course Proficiency (August).

HOW TO CALCULATE ANNUAL TOTAL AVERAGE

› If a student’s Spring and Fall AGE score is between 59.5 and 69, then their total cumulative academic score is considered. This means that the total cumulative academic score is averaged with the Spring and Fall AGE score. If this average score is 70 or higher, then the student passes. – The average of the total cumulative academic score of the last 2 periods before taking AGE exam are counted regardless of the student’s success in each level. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind that for the students starting the preparatory school at A+ level and reaching C level in the 4th period, the higher their average is in C level, the better chance they have to pass the proficiency exam.

HOW TO CALCULATE ANNUAL TOTAL AVERAGE

2) YBU ASSESSMENT IN GENERAL ENGLISH (AGE)

› Students registered in programs where the preparatory class is

• bligatory have a right to take the AGE exam if they get a score
• f 60 or higher from the YDDS exam.

› Students scoring 70 out of 100 are exempt from Preparatory Classes, while those scoring 80 out of a 100 are exempt from ENG 101. Students scoring 90 out of 100 are exempt from ENG 102, which is obligatory in departments, and they get “AA”. Students scoring under 70 are placed into Preparatory classes in the levels below.

✓Be at the exam room 10 minutes prior to the start of the exam. ✓Have formal photo identification with you (university card, national ID card, passport). ✓Turn off your mobile devices and hand them to the invigilator and clear the desk of bags and books. Students seen with such devices during the exam will be deemed cheating and disqualified from the exam. ✓If you have a health problem that requires you to leave the exam frequently, please inform your class teacher before the exam day and provide documentation to prove they have a medical condition.

D) Exam Rules

✓Communication of any kind with another student during an exam is strictly forbidden (talking, looking around the room at

• ther papers). If a student is seen communicating by an

invigilator, they will receive a warning. If it continues, they will be asked to sit in isolation. If it once again continues, the students’ paper will be taken and they must leave the exam room and the student will be given an F grade. ✓A student may not enter the room if the listening section has already started. ✓A student may not enter the classroom if s/he arrives more than 30 minutes late.

D) Exam Rules

✓A student may not leave the exam room in the first 30 minutes

✓Come to the exam prepared with pencils and erasers. It is forbidden to ask another student for pencils or erasers during the exam. ✓If you have a question, raise your hand and the teacher will come to you. ✓When you enter the exam room, follow the teachers’ instructions and sit silently for the exam to commence.

› Summer Course starts after the Spring Proficiency Exam, on the date determined by SFL administration. › It is not obligatory to attend the Summer Course, which is conducted to prepare the students for the Proficiency Exam.

How many times can Preparatory class be repeated?

› Twice at most. › All students registered to the preparatory school and post- graduate programs where the medium of instruction is in English MUST take and pass the proficiency exam. Students registered in the preparatory school are required to complete the preparatory school successfully within 2 academic years or they are expelled from the university. The proficiency exam is administered 4 times within the academic school year: September, January, June, and August. Students can only take the proficiency exam administered in September three times within 3 academic years. If they still fail, then they are expelled from the university. › Students failing their first year in the prep school will continue their second year of prep school in the Blended Learning program. (15 hours online + 8 hours in-class)

 As mentioned in the legislation of “17th Higher Education Institutions Consultation, Coordination and Solidarity with Disabled People”, Disabled Unit functions depending on Medico-Social Health Culture and Sport Affairs Directorate to identify and study the plan to be conducted. They also develop and evaluate the results of the studies and the implemented plans to fulfil the academic needs of disabled people which also provides equipment, meets the administrative, physical, sheltering, social and other related needs of disabled people.

It was put together by the Council of Europe as the main part of the project "Language Learning for European Citizenship" between 1989 and

• 1996. Its main aim is to provide a method of learning, teaching and
