What to Do Next?

´ Develop a Plan

´ 1. Why didn’t I make the team and how to change this for next year’s tryouts? ´ Embarrassed to be “too enthusiastic” ´ “Good enough” – hiding what I didn’t do well on school fight song ´ Not enough practice – overly confident and assumptions of being on team ´ OUCH – that hurt – hard lesson

´ 2. Learn new skills – beyond minimum requirements ´ 3. Prepare and Practice for all Requirements Consistently

Morning Routine Suggestions

´ *Drink water (20 ounces recommended) – helps with dehydration fatigue ´ Provides more energy ´ Gratitude (think or write at least 3 things grateful for–or do a gratitude walk) ´ Devotions and/or Meditation Practice (going inward) ´ Journaling (gratitude can be a part of this exercise); Could Write Dreams ´ What will I do today to make myself a better person today than I was yesterday? ´ *Move, yoga and/or Work Out (can start with 5 minutes walking, skipping, marching) ´ Reading, studying and/or Learning in an area you want to grow ´ Plan your Day (MIT) No more than 3 ´ Working on your most important project with uninterrupted time *My favorites

Micro Start Important Make it Simple Starting Out

´ Resist the urge to tackle all eight suggestions tomorrow ´ Choose 1, 2, or 3 items from previous slide to incorporate into your additional 15 minutes earlier that you are now getting up

´ Each item can take 5 minutes or less – An Example ´ Drink water (a must in my opinion) – 1minute ´ Devotions or meditation practice – 2 minutes ´ Move/walk and incorporate gratitude into this: time – 5 minutes ´ Plan your day – MIT – 5 minutes.

slide-14

Suggestions for Finding an Additional 15 Minutes in the Morning

´ Are you watching too much TV?

´ Average American watches 4 hours a day ´ Can you cut out one program (and go to bed earlier)?

´ Phone Usage

´ Spend less time on social media (morning and evenings)

´ If you are one of the people who starts your day swiping on your phone for 15 minutes before getting out of bed, this can be your 15 minutes. ´ Less time in the evening – then you can go to bed 15 minutes earlier ´ Watch your phone for usage time (iPhone shares each week how much screen time)

My Story Developed my “Morning Musts”

´ Over last two years I have gradually added most of the items on the list.

´ This has been a game changer for me.

´ “Need” and “Crave” these mornings ´ Drinking water and working out will make a significant difference (#1)

´ First 5 minutes of working out are the hardest (same as first 5 minutes when you get up)

´ Making your morning include the rituals for you will be a habit you will love

´ You will Feel Amazing and Ready to Conquer the Rest of your Day

´ By the time I get into work, I already feel like I’ve conquered “much” ´ Winning my morning definitely leads to winning my day!

slide-15

“ ”

A Healthy Person has 1,000 wishes and a Sick Person has 1 Wish.

Class Exercise

´ Write down your top 1-3 choices for a micro start to “Winning Your Morning, Win Your Day”

´ Choose which one(s) you will incorporate starting tomorrow (can be something different from the list too) ´ Decide why you want to start with this activity ´ Decide if you need to go to bed 15 minutes earlier

´ Share with one person what you are going to incorporate into your morning…and why it’s important to you.

´ You can write down what the others say too for ideas for you in the future

slide-16
SLIDE 16

5/3/19 ¡ 14 ¡

It can be Hard, It will be Hard!

´ Exercising was hard. ´ Getting up early was hard (can still be hard). ´ It’s worth the HARD. ´ You just have to want it bad enough (know your why). ´ If I can do it, you can too!

Honor, Embrace and Face Your Fears

Embrace the suck

Cold Shower Experience

FEAR OF DISCOMFORT

  • Walking into a pool inch by inch
  • Cold Shower Metaphor
  • Puts me in the mindset that I can

face the discomforts of the day and should embrace them

  • Reminds me that I just need to

“jump” and take action

Is Fear of Failure Holding You Back?

Fear of failure can stop you reaching your potential, says Robert Kelsey.

slide-18
SLIDE 18

5/3/19 ¡ 16 ¡ Firewalk Experience

FEAR OF FAILURE

  • Recall a large fear you have
  • vercome
  • Use this as a metaphor to push past

fear

  • How many of you have a current

fear that may be holding you back from advancing your career?

  • Visualize yourself handling your fear

Change your Mindset on Failure

´ You can change your mindset and think of “failure” not as a failure but as an learning opportunity – it can be a game changer.

´ Fear of failure is often the toughest hurdle to jump in leadership. We need to flip the idea of failure on its head. Rather than allowing failure to slow down progress or even prevent us from starting in the first place, leaders can use the power of failure to “fail forward.” Failure is the first step in starting most things. The people you lead are counting on your ability to turn failure into resilience, and it’s a requirement for your growth as a leader. (Taken from an introduction to a John C. Maxwell podcast of failure)

One Approach to Conquering your Biggest Fear

´ Lewis Howes (The School of Greatness) ´ Put yourself in the situations or roles that you are most afraid of ´ Talking to girls

DO IT AFRAID (Make it your new mantra)

Get comfortable with the uncomfortable as that’s where you’ll grow…

slide-20
SLIDE 20

5/3/19 ¡ 18 ¡

Servant Leader Approach

´ Think about an area of being a great leader that you may have a fear of failure or discomfort about doing ´ Make the outcome of your “fear” more than just about you – but how facing the fear you can serve others

Class Exercise

´ Write down at least one fear that’s holding you back from being the best leader you can be.

´ What’s keeping from you getting to your next level of leadership?

´ Do you have to do presentations or talk with upper management? ´ Are you afraid you might be perceived differently? ´ That you might lose some connections with close friends when you have ambitions to move your career to the next level of leadership? ´ Are you afraid to have an opposing opinion in a meeting? ´ It can even be a small discomfort that has been holding you back. If it is holding you back, it counts.

slide-21
SLIDE 21

5/3/19 ¡ 19 ¡

Class Exercise Continued

´ Write down why it’s important for you to overcome this at this time in your life. ´ Write why you are afraid of this fear? Choose the first fear you want to conquer and think about what the first steps you need to take are. ´ Write down what happens when your fear comes true – how will you handle it? ´ Write down a previous fear accomplishment (metaphor you can use to draw strength from) that you can help push you through your fears.

´ One time fear or many times needed to push past the fear ´ Remember a baby learning to walk falls down many times before it gets it

Failing from time to time— which we all will do if we want to grow (and as leaders that is what it’s all about) —doesn't mean you're a failure. It simply means you’re not perfect and don't do everything right all of the time. This is the mindset you must have to face your fears.

slide-22
SLIDE 22

5/3/19 ¡ 20 ¡

Example: My Story Public Speaking Fear/Failure

Thinking through my Fear

´ I may fail…it’s a learning opportunity. I can learn what I need to do differently next time. ´ I might be ridiculed. I can handle the embarrassment and I’ve been embarrassed many times in my life and lived through it all. ´ I might receive many 0,1,2’s and negative feedback or hopefully constructive

  • feedback. I will approach these comments as a gift to me. I’m new at this

speaking gig so any feedback would be helpful. ´ I may be speaking to just a few attendees at the end – I still will give my all as they are the people who are supposed to hear my message. ´ I forget where I’m at or my train of thought. I have notes which I will use. ´ My nerves could get the best of me. I need to take a few deep breathes and compose myself. The people who attend Star conferences are forgiving

  • people. They understand I’m not a professional speaker and that is my first time.

Fear Exercise

´ Share with a neighbor your fear and what you are going to do with it.

´ For some of you this may be a fear right now to share. I challenge you to face this! ´ Remember: STAR attendees are awesome understanding people. ´ Do it afraid – networking may be your fear and this will be your first attempt at facing this fear. ´ Not required but truly hope you are willing to share with someone.

Secrets of a Buccaneer-Scholar: How Self- Education and the Pursuit of Passion Can Lead to a Lifetime of Success – James Bach

  • High School Drop Out
  • One of the most well known, self-educated and paid

testers in our community

  • Awesome guide on how to pursue deep learning and

growing

  • Primary focus is on self-education and creating your own

curriculum of study (Chapter 11 – “Treasure Map – The Power of a Personal Syllabus”)

  • Discusses the fears he overcame in this book
  • By discovering his passion and why (bigger than fear)
  • Highly suggest it be one of the top three books you read in

next year

  • Rapid Software Testing Course (James Bach and

Michael Bolton) – Promotes concept of continuous learning

Leaders are always students first, just as experts are always students first. We don’t stop learning.

´ This must be part of our growth mindset. That’s why it’s so exciting to be a leader even if it’s just of ourselves – we are students who are always learning and applying what we learn.
