Goals

  • Find the best way how to

import a model of Masha from 3ds Max to Blender 3D.

  • Explore Blender's capabilities

in face rigging.

  • Rig Masha with some facial

expressions using Blender 3D.

Importing to Blender 3D

  • OBJ format allows

storing geometry and texture coordinates.

  • Blender offers full-

featured importer of OBJ files and 3ds Max has an OBJ exporter.

Used Techniques

  • Facial expressions are

implemented by adding armature (bones) to Masha's face.

slide-5

IBM - CVUT Student Research Projects 5

Used Techniques

  • Bones are attached to

the mesh using the Weight painting technique.

slide-6

Used Techniques

  • Expressions are made

by stretching the bones just like real muscles.

Used Techniques

  • Eyelids are controlled

by bone-driven shape keys (also called morph targets).

  • Unwanted mesh

deformations are compensated in the same way.

Conclusion

  • Model of Masha was imported from 3ds

Max to Blender 3D without problems.

  • Masha was rigged with facial expressions

using several advanced techniques offered by Blender 3D.

  • In future, more bones could be added so

better and more believable expressions would be achieved.
