Building and Construction industry is recognised as the unorganised sector with vast labour intensity and economicactivity after agriculture in India. This industry generates demand for both skilled and semi-skilled labour force. The workers face inherent risk to life/vital body parts due to occupational hazards. However, these labourers work is of temporary and casual in nature with lack of basic amenities and casual in nature with lack of basic amenities and inadequate welfare facilities. With an objective of providing adequate working conditions and welfare amenities, the Government of India enacted the Building and Other Construction Workers (Regulation of employment and conditions of services) Act, 1996 and Rules have been framed.

Common situation on a construction site

Construction work is dynamic, diverse, and constantly changing in nature. Constantly changing job site environments and conditions Multiple contractors and subcontractors High turnover; unskilled laborers Constantly changing relationships with other work groups Constantly changing relationships with other work groups Diversity of work activities occurring simultaneously Construction workers are at risk of exposure to various hazards and risks that can result in injury, illness, permanent disability, or even death.

Potential hazards for workers in construction include:

Falls (from heights); Trench collapse; Scaffold collapse; Fall from ladder Electric shock and arc flash/arc blast; Electrocution; Failure to use proper personal protective equipment; Repetitive motion injuries; Being struck by falling objects;

Definitions

Why Construction Safety

Construction safety aims at preventing accidents and fatalities at construction sites. Construction can be a safe occupation when workers are aware of the hazards, and an workers are aware of the hazards, and an effective safety and health program is in place and is used.

Unsafe Act

Performance of a task or other activity that is conducted in a manner that may threaten the health and/or safety of workers. For example:

  • Lack of or improper use of PPE.
  • Failure to tagout /lockout.
  • Operating equipment at unsafe speed.
  • Failure to warn people in the area of work activity.
  • Bypass or removal of safety devices.
  • Using defective equipment.
  • Use of tools for other than their intended purpose.
  • Working in hazardous locations without adequate protection or warning.
  • Improper repair of equipment.
