An introduction to independent study and research The project is usually undertaken individually

The project is assessed principally by

a literature review (10%) a dissertation (80%), a seminar (10%), and

You are expected to meet with your supervisor(s) regularly

Getting involved in research in the Department

Research into the Department is devolved into a number of different research groups consisting of people with similar interests

research groups provide valuable knowledge and interaction each student is expected to join a research group you are expected to attend and contribute to all research group meetings

The Department runs a series of research seminars throughout the year by our staff, students, and visitors

you are expected to attend all seminars watching seminars is a great way to learn how to present them

It can be an extremely tough year

work consistently throughout the year, i.e. don’t leave everything to the last minute be organised! this is NOT the time to balance full-time study and part-time employment
