Introduction Katherine Hughes 18 months into my 2 year Cyber Security Apprenticeship Based in Cumbria working for Sellafield Ltd.
My Career Journey Always had an interest in the STEM subjects Spent 2 weeks at Sellafield with the civil design team for work experience Left Sixth Form in 2017 with A-levels in Maths, Biology, Geography and Philosophy & Ethics Applied for Energus’ Cyber Apprenticeship Scheme in April 2017 and was accepted in July.
Why I chose this Apprenticeship • University wasn’t an option for me • Financial Independence • Direct route into the industry I wanted to work in • Allowed me to stay local • Field of work sounded really interesting
Qualifications Gained • Level 4 BCS – Network and Communication Theory • Level 4 BCS – Security Fundamentals • Level 4 BCS – Security Cases and Design Good Practice • Level 4 BCS – Technology Building Blocks • Level 4 BCS – Employment of Cryptography
My Aspirations • Gain full time employment at Sellafield after my apprenticeship • To work within Information Assurance at Sellafield • Open Source Intelligence and Counter- terrorism for the Nuclear Industry
Filling the Cyber Skills Gap • Apprenticeship Schemes • Cyber First • STEM events in schools • Getting the word out there
