• Most of the time, this person will be brought

to the police station.

• Depending on the time of day or even the day
• f the week, this person may be held at the

police station for several hours, sometimes a day or two!

 It’s only then that we, at OCDC, see them.  They arrive to us tired, scared, angry and

highly-stressed.

Canada, called Crisis in Correctional Services, pointed to what it called …disturbing trends:…an increasing number of inmates who require mental health and addictions treatments… »

 We have dedicated trained officers working

for the admitting area.

 They see every single person that’s admitted

to our institution.

 As much as we understand the

circumstances, we we need ed to to follow policies es and d procedur cedures es!

 Strip-searched  Searching of property  Shower  Questions ?  Questions ?  Questions ?  … and more questions ?

 Depending on how they present themselves

upon admission as well as their past history within our institution, they may be seen by

• fficers,

Sergeants, nurses, psychologists and/or mental health nurse.

What is routine for us can be completely unknown and frightening for them.

The Discharge from Court Program, one of many programs offered in our institution, gives them one less thing to worry about.

management services

 814 clients participated at our 3 Social

Recreational Centers

 118 clients received court related services

with 738 face to face or telephone contacts

 428 individuals received solely information

and referral services

to internal miscommunication

incredibly successful in our area. It is well organized by our involved community partners. Our officers physically handles the bags as a result

• f the coordinating that is done between

CMHA and OCDC. This program causes minimal additional work for us while conversely making the Offenders transition easier.

L’Orignal Court without the red envelope

 The same day he damaged the window and

door at his own apartment because he did not have his home keys- landlord called police and was charged

 During the same week, he stole medication

from another person because he did not have a prescription and could not get one from the doctor because he did not have his Health Card- ……Back at OCDC

 Bilingual leaflet promoting the program was

created in August 2015 .

 The goal is to send to all Lawyers and Duty

Counsel and have it easily available in various Courts
