Engaged Philanthropy

  • The Rank Foundation operates a model of engaged philanthropy,

combining intellectual, social and financial capital in order to maximise impact, whilst leveraging additional funding and support:

  • Financial Capital: flexible funding, long term support
  • Intellectual Capital: sharing good practice, bursaries, education &

training

  • Social Capital: networking through RankNet and our Fellowship
  • Our experience suggests that by concentrating funding,

knowledge and expertise in a very focused way, promoting stronger partnerships and increased collaboration, helps to ‘add value’ where the outcome is greater than the sum of each part.

Working within the Social Sector

  • Challenges of attracting and retaining diverse skills

within the social sector.

  • Greater competition among social sector organisations

for funding resources.

  • Social sector organisations need to continue to

modernise structure and services to be fit to support those in greatest need.

  • The Rank Foundation needs to be agile to respond to

changing needs and to deliver programmes relevant to the challenge of increasing capacity and quality of the social sector in precarious times.

Place-based Programmes

The key characteristics of engaged philanthropy and place-based funding, as demonstrated through the Hull Community Development Programme are:

  • Intelligence: reconnaissance, consultation, planning and preparation – it takes time
  • Relationships: understand the environment, get to know key people, keep showing up
  • Financial and Non Financial Support: in addition to funding, look to build and sustain

networks, offer training, and focus on developing resilience and sustainability

  • Local Leadership: invest in and support local leadership; use an 'associate' model to

ensure permanent local presence, with a view to fostering a strategic influence with other sectors

  • Communications: create ways of sharing success, failure, concerns and opportunities
  • Collaboration: Promote a strong collaborative spirit as the key driver of 'added value', and

build networks that last

  • Long term thinking: look to leaving a legacy beyond the funding period
