  • This knowledge-sharing and capacity building is

critically important to TREDA to improve our ability to support the trade research and policy development needs of the Ministry of Trade.

Knowledge and Skills Gained:

  • The research interns identified a range of products and commodities with a

good chance of finding a market in Canada

  • The research interns learned how to apply a methodology which identifies

“rising stars” and “missed opportunities”.

  • The research interns learned the research working environment in Canada.

Internship on: Enhancing Indonesia’s Exports to Canada

Benefits, Outcomes and Impacts Gained:

  • Via this activity, TREDA has directly assisted the Directorate General for

National Export Development by identifying products and commodities which have good prospects for export to Canada, using a comparative-advantage analytical method.

  • TREDA gained additional knowledge and analytical expertise to support our

recommendation to shift from a supply-driven to a market-driven export promotion strategy.

The intern gained new knowledge including:

  • Understanding that Indonesia’s Service Exports have been

undervalued

  • Identifying all of the ways that services are exported
  • Increased awareness of the negative impacts on competitiveness

caused by high restrictiveness on investments in services in Indonesia.

Benefits, Outcomes and Impacts Gained:

  • An intern from TREDA is now sharing and applying new knowledge

and understanding of the role and importance of services trade in Indonesia’s economy.

The intern was able to gain knowledge about Canadian food safety systems and the market for fish and processed fish exports to Canada:

  • Trends in fish and processed fish product exports and imports
  • Canadian market potential for Indonesian fish and processed fish
  • Public and Private Standards in Canada that impact on fish product
  • Ways Indonesia can better access the Canadian market

Internship on Canadian Food and Product Standards (Fish and Processed Fish)

Benefits, Outcomes and Impacts Gained:

  • An expert staff from TREDA is now sharing and applying new knowledge of Canada’s

food safety and product safety systems to identify ways to strengthen systems to support the private sector in Indonesia.

  • TREDA staff gained new economic modelling skills and methods, and

developed a working economic model of Indonesia’s exports.

  • How NTMs different from tariff measures
  • How NTMs are distinguished and coded
  • How NTMs applied by one country can be identified

  • How NTM data can be “read” and used for trade analysis
  • How NTMs affect trade?
  • The importance of NTMs to trade and trade negotiation

Workshop on Analyzing Non-Tariff Measures

Benefits, Outcomes and Impacts Gained:

  • TREDA staff gained and are now applying a deeper understanding of how to

identify and analyze non-tariff Measures that are hindering exports to Canada and to other countries.

TREDA participants gained deeper understanding on: ▪ WTO rules on anti-dumping ▪ when and how to apply anti-dumping measures ▪ use of subsidies and countervailing measures ▪ safeguard measures to protect against import surges

Workshops on WTO Trade Remedies

Benefits, Outcomes and Impacts Gained:

▪ TREDA staff gained and are applying increased knowledge of ways to defend against unfair trade practices and import surges. ▪ This deeper understanding has allowed TREDA staff to provide better quality inputs to various cases and committees on Trade Remedies.

Workshop on Global Value Chains

Benefits, Outcomes and Impacts Gained:

  • TREDA staff learned to identify barriers to competitiveness, and to develop

strategies to overcome these barriers via training on analyzing global value chains.

skills, and are applying what they have gained to fulfill our mandate to support the analysis and development of effective trade policy for the Ministry of Trade and other related stakeholders in Indonesia.
