HOUNDS ARE TYPICALLY CLASSIFIED IN TWO WAYS • Scent Hounds e.g. • Bassets • Beagles • Dachshunds etc. • Sight Hounds • Afghans • Borzoi • Saluki

HOWEVER FCI LOOKS AT THEM DIFFERENTLY • Group 4 Dachshunds (3 sizes and 3 Coats) • Group 5 Spitz and primitive types (Includes Basenji, Pharaoh Hound and Podengos) • Group 6 Scent hounds and related breeds (Includes Rhodesian Ridgeback and Dalmatian!) • Group 10 Sighthounds

WHY ARE THE DACHSHUNDS DIFFERENT? (1) • What's in a name • Dachshund – German Origin translates to Badger Dog • Dackel or T eckel – More commonly used in Germany now. In Germany, all Dachshunds are called “Dackels,” but among hunters, they’re called “Teckels • What about sizes • Standard • Miniature • Rabbit Dachshund (FCI - Kaninchen)

WHY ARE THE DACHSHUNDS DIFFERENT? (2) • How do we differentiate? • Size - FCI • Weight – UK, NZ, Australia • Game Hunted – Badger, Hare, Rabbit

STRUCTURE (1) • Flap or folded ears - keeps grass seeds, dirt, and other matter from entering the ear canal • Tail - dual-purpose: seen more easily in long grass and, help haul the dog out if it becomes stuck in a burrow • Body Structure and Leg length • Short Legs (achondroplasic structure) • Good reach and drive • Not too low in keel – think of rough ground or down a burrow

STRUCTURE (2) • Overall Structure – Balance • Long Rib Cage • Good lung capacity (not a lot of air down a burrow) • Supports the back • Elastic Skin • Stretch and slip like a loose glove • Not wrinkled or loose around legs and throat

STRUCTURE (3) • Correct Gait • Huge importance for a hunting dog • Straight movements avoids fatigue • 90 degree angulation provide a shock absorber effect • Must have reach and drive (no sickle hocks or goose stepping) • Balance Front and Rear
