A FAMILY PASSION

Third-generation pharmacist in his family, Dominique Baudoux had not planned

• n becoming one of the biggest employers of his region. His early and growing

interest in essential oils, which had been forgotten and replaced by synthetic chemistry down through the years, changed his life. Faced with the exceptional richness of aromatherapy and its therapeutic arsenal, the scientist could not help being motivated by a growing desire to share his discoveries with his peers fjrst, and then with the world. However, Dominique’s ambition started ofg very modestly, working in a garage with help from his siblings and friends. It is hard to believe that in less than a generation, Pranarôm has become one of the major world players in the fjeld of aromatherapy.

SYSTEMATIC QUALITY TESTING

Physical Essential oils are analyzed according to refractive index, rotary power, density measurement, fmash point calculation, etc. Other physical properties such as scent, color and texture are analyzed as well. Chemical The constituents of each essential oil are evaluated through chromatography and mass spectrometry. Molecular Every individual batch of essential oil is botanically and biochemically identifjed and analyzed by chromatography in gas form. This ensures that the essential oils contain the correct proportions of their defjning molecules.

WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT ELEMENTS TO RECOGNIZE ON A LABEL? READING ESSENTIAL OIL LABELS

Like wine, essential oils are never exactly the same from one year to the next or from one region to another, being subject to variations in climate, sunshine, soil composition and altitude. These parameters sometimes have a very signifjcant infmuence on the properties, conditions and use of essential oils. For these reasons, we establish a clear chromatography for each batch of our oils to ensure that they contain the correct proportions of their defjning molecules. Chemotypes, if applicable, will also be noted. For example, Rosemary produces 3 different essential oils depending on where it is grown: Morocco Eugenol, the Eucalyptus molecule, is dominant (1,8 Cineole), giving the EO expectorant properties. Provence The Camphor molecule is dominant (Borneone), giving the EO muscle-relaxing, neurotoxic or abortive properties, depending on the dosage. Corsica The Verbenone molecule is dominant, providing hepatic stimulant properties. Indicating the chemotype as well as the name of the plant is elementary in this particular case. “Sub-chemotypes” may also exist as a result of seasonal variations, sometimes infmuencing the scent and the potency of specific properties in the essential oil. Latin name This is the only name that remains consistent regardless of the country, common name or brand. For example, Lavender comes in difgerent varieties – Lavendula spicata vs. Lavendula angustifolia Chemotype (CTEO), when it is appropriate, it is indicated. Sandalwood has been declared a threatened species in many countries due to unsustainable cultivation, but this has been avoided in Western Australia by conservation laws and collaboration with the Aborigines. We are proud to support the protection of such a valuable resource. We also promote the development of organic crops and support enterprises like Graine de Vie (Seed of Life), a company that plants millions of endangered trees in Madagascar every year.
