Fuel Production of Ethanol March 8, 2007 Jennifer Johnson Aquila Hughley Blake Nida Jimmy Grant Dr. Jim Henry University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Outline • Definitions • Background • Existing Plants • Our Design • Challenges • Benefits • Partnerships
Definitions • Waste Paper (WP)- newspapers, food packaging, tissues, cardboard boxes, office paper, paper plates, etc. • EtOH – fuel ethanol Background Energy Shortages & Oil Depletion – Petroleum and natural gas account for approx. 65% of US energy supply – Oil demand increases at a rate of 2% a year – Demand and consumption is far greater than supply and production
Background Fuel Solutions • Conversion of waste paper to energy • US paper products make up 31-38% composition of landfills • Today over 51 million tons of paper and paper products are being recycled annually
Existing EtOH Plants • 116 ethanol plants – Generating 5536 million gallons per year – Mostly corn based – No waste paper based • Plant to be built in Greece, NY – 15,000 square feet plant – Will produce 500,000 gallons per year Our Design Process Flow – Pretreatment – Enzyme Hydrolysis – Fermentation – Separation
Block Flow Diagram Challenges • Choice of Enzyme and Yeast – Yeast versus Bacteria (Yield) – Cost • Collection and Transportation of Free Waste Paper – Low Cost, No Cost or Paid
Cost of EtOH • Raw Materials – Waste Paper – Water – Enzyme – Yeast • Capital Costs – Cost of each piece of equipment using CAPCOST program • Operating Costs Locations for Plant • Enterprise South • On Tennessee River • Soddy Daisy / Sale Creek
Partnerships • City of Chattanooga • Department of Energy – Six cellulosic ethanol plants for up to $385 million in federal funding
