What is the LIF? The LIFC?

  • The SSMU Library Improvement Fund (LIF) is composed of SSMU student fees

(which alumni donors match) to enrich library resources used by students

  • The SSMU Library Improvement Fund Committee (LIFC):
  • Allocates the LIF each year
  • Consults with students on Library priorities
  • Solicits, facilitates, and reviews LIF proposals

Outreach Efforts

General Consultation

  • LIF-McGill Library Open Forum
  • Whiteboard, with LIFC members, Library administrative staff present, set up in the McLennan-Redpath

  • Free Coffee Tabling Event, McIntyre (near Osler Library)
  • Facebook, Listserv, Reddit promotion
  • Overall, about 450 people consulted in 2015-2016

Targeted Proposal Solicitation

  • Work with people already committed to serving their constituents, strong knowledge of

constituent need

  • Departmental, Faculty Society VP Academics
  • Student Life Groups – both student- and staff-run
  • Lowered initial info requirements, spent more time working with Library, proposal submitters

to get final quotes

  • Record 24 proposals received this year

  • Student Experience
  • Longevity
  • Accessibility
  • Feasibility/Logistics
  • Committee members evaluated twenty-eight proposals
