Archipelago is a new open source repository architecture whose first release is based on our experience with all of the other systems out there.
SLIDE 17 Archipelago is a new open source repository architecture whose first release is based on our experience with all of the other systems out there.
Some examples of concepts / functionality found in other projects:
- Like Invenio, we handle metadata as JSON, though a little differently.
- Like Islandora, we use Drupal, though we do so a little differently.
- Like ISLE, we have a simple, dockerized deployment strategy
- Like Fedora 6, we are using the Oxford Common File System, though a little
differently to work with S3 / min.io
- Like Samvera, we plan for a single architecture with many ‘heads’, though we
may segment them a little differently (more on this later)

Here’s the plan.
1: What is METRO? 2: Why is METRO making a new open source repository architecture? 3: What is Archipelago? 4: How are we going to do this?
SLIDE 30 DCMNY is where this all began.
SLIDE 31 This is the primary use case we are looking to solve.
SLIDE 32 But Archipelago can support many uses cases.
SLIDE 33 So, over the course of the next 3 years, we will rebuild METRO’s consortial repository service from the ground up.
