CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS & PRODUCT SELECTION • Kids from ages 5 to 10 • We chose a car because it ’ s a universally appealing toy, and we made it “built it yourself" so kids are able to change out the body style and see the inner workings of a car • Other ideas we had: – “Angry Birds” real life simulation game – Brain teaser puzzle – Solar powered car
CONCEPTUAL DESIGN • Several choices and different routes we could take building the car: – 3D print the wheels vs. buy wheels – Solar power vs. propeller – 3D print body vs. build out of wood • We chose to 3D print the body and laser cut the wheels to give us more accuracy when designing • We also chose to use a propeller to eliminate some of the electrical work that comes with using a solar panel
ACTUAL DESIGN • 3D printed body of car – T op picture is dragster design – Bottom picture is base – Bottom and top connected with pegs in holes • Propeller attached to motor set out of hole in the back of the base and then to 9 volt battery • Axels attached with hot glue • Laser cut wheels

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK AND RESULTS • Prototype showed to two boys, ages 6 and 8 – Interested about the idea that you could change the body style – Wanted multiple cars to be sturdy enough to be rough with – Brought up the idea of adding on “fast packs” which would essentially be more powerful motors to make the cars go faster
COST AND TIME ESTIMATE • Prototyping costs: $13.79 – Axels: $1.55 – Propeller: $0.44 – Motor: $1.93 – 3D printing cost: $3.20 – Battery terminal: $0.44 – Velcro: $ 1.24 – Toggle Switch: $4.99 – Batteries not included • Cost per 1000 units: $8,990 – Buying in bulk, decrease price by 35% • Retail price: $29.99 • Design time: 19.25 hours – Data from Project Notebook
CONCLUSION • The biggest obstacle we had to overcome was the time constraint of 3D printing – Our design is simple but because we tried to print 4 wheels and the body it was difficult to build quickly while waiting for the parts to finish • We stand by the quality of our product and believe it will be successful in the market because of the versatility and simplicity of the design • If we were to redesign the product, we would make the entire car wooden and not 3D print the body
