HKOX Initiatives

  • Global Network Architecture (GNA) Vision:
  • Sustainable high performance global interconnect for Research and

Education

  • Bring the intercontinental R&E network infrastructures within reach
  • The concept of setting up a Hong Kong Open Exchange Point was first mentioned

in APAN42 in Hong Kong, with the topic “The Possible Hong Kong Open Exchange Point”

  • JUCC, being a consortium of tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, feels the
  • bligation to create an “architecture” (HKOX) to increase collaboration and

achieve resource sharing within the global R&E Community

slide-3
SLIDE 3
  • JUCC formed a HKOXP Task Force in Nov 2016 to evaluate how JUCC participates

in setting up an Open Exchange Point in Hong Kong

  • JUCC considered different operational models
  • Collaboration model with the Hong Kong Internet Exchange (HKIX)
  • Meetings conducted with HKIX for possible collaboration, such as leveraging

the existing HKIX-R&E node, manpower, expertise

  • HKOX and HKIX to operate the R&E nodes independently
  • JUCC represents the Hong Kong universities research community and has the

mandate to serve and develop the community

HKOX Initiatives

slide-4
SLIDE 4
  • Independent business model
  • JUCC operates our own exchange point
  • Port charge will be waived for at least two years
  • Subsidized business model
  • HKSAR OGCIO (Office of the Government Chief Information Officer) sent

representatives to join the APAN42 in order to understand the establishment

  • f a Hong Kong Open Exchange Point
  • HKSAR OGCIO showed support to JUCC for establishing the HKOX for

worldwide research and education activities

  • Funding support will be sought from the HKSAR Government for the

continual development of HKOX

HKOX Initiatives

slide-5
SLIDE 5
  • JUCC would like to acknowledge the previous contribution of HKIX on

Internet exchange

  • JUCC decided to extend our existing Hong Kong Academic and Research

Network (HARNET) and added an R&E node in MEGA-i to the HARNET infrastructure as a starting point for HKOX

  • JUCC / HKOX represents an active and vibrant research community in Hong
  • Kong. We have hundreds of active research projects with overseas

institutions.

  • JUCC, composed of CIOs and IT Directors of member institutions, has

management oversight of the development of HKOX

HKOX Initiatives

  • NRENs are welcomed to connect to the HKOX so that researchers in Hong

Kong can work effectively with counterparts through connected NRENs

  • NRENs can decide the peering (bilateral or multilateral) model as to facilitate

academic and research projects

  • MOU with TransPAC, SingAREN and TEIN for close collaboration

HKOX Initiatives

slide-7
SLIDE 7
  • HKUST-MIT Research

Alliance Consortium

  • Build up a network for local

universities and leading technology companies to collaborate with their international counterparts

  • n future advancement in

high-tech research

R&E Projects

  • HKU School of Public Health: Mining the Antibiotic

Resistance Genes

  • Objective: To investigate the global distribution of different

antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and study their evolution and emergence

  • Research using genome datasets from US databanks

(National Center for Biotechnology Information, ChicagoU and Argonne National Laboratory)

  • Genomic Datasets: RefSeq, nt/nr, WGS, SRA databases

from National Center for Biotechnology Information (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) and the MG-RAST metagenomic database (www.mg-rast.org) from The University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory

R&E Projects

  • CUHK Signs Agreement with CERN to Enable Physics
  • Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) setup a HPC

Cluster linking with CERN HPC Cluster for physics calculation and analytics

  • HPC Cluster Configuration:
  • 18x worker node with 1008 Cores
  • 3x DPM disk nodes (436TB)
  • 4x DPM disk nodes (654TB) – to be deployed in

summer

  • Future Plan: Optimize the network by LHCONE peering

HKOX Layer 3 Transport Service

  • Multilateral Peering (MLP) with HARNET Institutions and NREN Partners on HKOX Router
  • By default, routes are not exchanged among NRENs on HKOX, but HKOX encourages NRENs to share their routes

with others
