Health issues and inequalities in Haringey

  • Population of just over 270,000
  • 6th most deprived borough in London
  • Deprivation is more concentrated in the north east.
  • Significant health issues in Haringey include:
  • Poor emotional and mental health affecting wellbeing
  • High rates of childhood obesity particularly in east of borough
  • High rates of severe mental illness
  • Long-term health conditions and frailty

Poor health and wellbeing is often linked to challenges with housing, debt and employment so needs more than just healthcare.

Collaboration

We know that social factors such as housing, education and employment affect health and wellbeing. Working together, we can jointly improve them.

Engaging with residents and communities People want support to help themselves. Services should be joined up around people and family. Prevention is important to people. Working together We already work together to provide joined up care for some groups of people. We want to take this forward for whole communities.

What are Primary Care Networks?

  • Groups of practices serving between 30,000 to 50,000 people, covering the whole population
  • Practices are working together in Networks in local areas so they are nearby to one another
  • First year is about getting started; you won’t see significant impact straight away
  • Networks will employ additional staff, including pharmacists, community paramedics,

physiotherapists and people called ‘social prescribers’

  • Networks will provide more access to appointments for their patients
  • Networks will work closely with other services like community services, social care and mental

health

  • Networks will work to improve the wellbeing of their populations

Change is on the horizon

NHS LONG TERM PLAN The Long Term Plan sets out priorities and changes to the way health services will be delivered. Building on previous policy, changes include a focus on integration and a move to Integrated Care Systems. NORTH CENTRAL LONDON – MERGING CCGs To implement the Long Term Plan’s ambitions means merging to a single CCG for north central London and we are working with Barnet, Camden, Enfield and Islington CCGs on plans to merge from April 2020. LEADERSHIP Clinical leadership will continue to remain at the heart of commissioning and shape how we work in the future.
