Last year more than 9,000 students representing 133* nations and 1642 international faculty and staff representing 78* nations were a part of the Boilermaker family. ISS is committed to the internationalization of Purdue University by providing appropriate services and support to international clientele and various University departments and offices. ISS seeks to enhance the academic, cultural, and social pursuits of students and scholars from abroad through knowledge and expertise in programming, engagement, immigration, and advising.

10 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN CULTURE

1) Alchohol/Smoking

  • Drinking age is 21
  • Smoking just in “smoking areas”

2) Driving Laws

  • Both Driver & passengers must wear seat belt
  • Limit how often you honk your horn
  • Allow pedestrians to have the right of way
  • Give a little wave if someone lets you merge

3) Animals/Pets

  • See them as “part of the family”
  • Dogs, cats, hamsters, and fish

4) Dress and Modesty Standards

  • Dress casually during the daytime at school
  • In a formal setting, men should wear a suit

5) Out in Public

  • Hold the door open for people walking behind you
  • Wait in line patiently
  • Treat people in service positions as equals.
  • Give tips in restaurants, hotels, hair salons, etc

6) Gestures

  • “thumbs up” mean “That’s cool!”, or “Good job!”
  • Pointing at people is seen as rude

7) Social Courtesy

  • Smiles are signals of politeness and friendliness
  • Avoid making eye contact with strangers
  • “Small talk” is acceptable & considered “nice”
  • Personal space (2 feet apart when talking)

8) The Value of time

  • Time Is Money
  • Arriving 10 minutes late without notifying is

not socially acceptable

9) Personal Hygiene

  • Shower every day and wear deodorant.
  • Using too much perfume is not desired either
  • Brush teeth after eating smelly foods

10) Usage of First Name, Last Name, and Title

  • Address people by title and last name
  • Using “Sir” and “Madam” are not common
