Choice Option

JSD will provide 2 options for educating your children this year.

  • 1. In person instruction at the school building
  • 2. Remote learning provided by a district teacher. While instruction will be provided by the

teacher, parental involvement will be necessary at times. You will be asked to make a choice by August 14, 2020. You will be allowed to change programming up to September 4, 2020. After September 4, students will continue in their learning environment for the remainder of the quarter/semester. All students, staff, parents, and visitors will follow safety procedures and protocols outlined by JSD117 while on JSD property. Students and/or parents not following safety procedures and protocols may result in students being placed in remote learning for the remainder of the quarter/semester.

In-person Instruction

In accordance with guidance from ISBE stating that schools and districts are “strongly encouraged to provide in-person instruction for all students, especially those under the age of 13,” JSD 117 has separated the students into three groups. Students will be in attendance Monday through Friday. Elementary students will return to school following an extremely similar schedule as they have always

  • perated under.
  • All elementary buildings, except Murrayville-Woodson

○ 7:35 am - School doors open for students. Students should not be dropped off early. Students will report directly to their classrooms. Breakfast, if desired, will be provided in the classroom. ○ 8:00 am - 2:30 pm - Instructional Day for students ■ Students will remain in their classrooms for the majority of the day ■ Special classes (Art, Music, PE, Library) will be held in the regular education classrooms ■ Lunch will be provided in the classroom ■ There will be no outside recess during the lunch period. Noon supervisors will watch students in each classroom for the entire 30 minutes. There are

  • pportunities for structured free time after eating.

○ 2:30 pm - Students will be dismissed for the day (Dismissal procedures will vary based

  • n school building needs.)

  • Murrayville-Woodson Elementary

○ 7:15 am - School doors open for students. Students should not be dropped off early. Students will report directly to their classrooms. Breakfast, if desired, will be provided in the classroom. ○ 7:50 am - 2:15 pm - Instructional Day for students ■ Students will remain in their classrooms for the majority of the day ■ Special classes (Art, Music, PE, Library) will be held in the regular education classrooms ■ Lunch will be provided in the classroom ■ There will be no outside recess during the lunch period. Noon supervisors will watch students in each classroom for the entire 30 minutes. There are

  • pportunities for structured free time after eating.

○ 2:30 pm - Students will be dismissed for the day JMS students will return to school on a condensed 5 period day.

  • 7:55 am - School doors open for students. Students should not be dropped off early.

Students will report directly to their first hour classrooms. Breakfast, if desired, will be provided and eaten in the classroom.

  • 8:15 am - 12:32 pm - Students will attend all 5 periods each day. Our goal is to have students

move as little as possible throughout the day.

  • 12:32 pm - Students will be dismissed.
  • Students will have an option of a sack lunch to eat as they leave the building for the day.
  • PE will not be a class offered during the day. However, students will be required to log daily

physical activity, to be determined by the PE teachers, and return log to school to receive credit for the course. More details will be coming.

  • Students can bring a snack during the day. Students will need to follow allergy guidelines.
  • The times listed above are subject to slight changes based upon transportation.

JHS students will return to school as follows:

  • 7:45 am - School doors open for students. Students should not be dropped off early.

Students will report directly to their first hour classrooms. Breakfast, if desired, will be provided and eaten in the classroom.

  • 8:05 am - 12:35 pm - Students will attend 6 periods per day, Tuesday through Friday. All

students will attend classes remotely on Monday.

  • 12:35 pm - Students will be dismissed.
  • Students will have an option of a sack lunch to eat as they leave the building for the day.
  • PE will not be a class offered during the day. However, students will be required to log daily

physical activity, to be determined by the PE teachers, and return log to school to receive credit for the course. More details will be coming.

  • Students can bring a snack during the day. Students will need to follow allergy guidelines.

  • Early Bird - AP Chemistry will meet 2 days per week as required by the College Board to

complete lab work.

  • The times listed above are subject to slight changes based upon transportation.

Remote Instruction

Elementary students - Based on numbers, all remote students will be placed in a common “classroom” taught by a single teacher. Students can be expected to complete online assignments and packets of materials throughout the day. Teachers will be available for synchronous interaction from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. JMS students - Students can be expected to complete online assignments and packets of materials throughout the day. The teachers will be available daily for synchronous interaction with students from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. JHS students - Students can be expected to complete online assignments and packets of materials throughout the day. The teachers will be available Tuesday through Friday for synchronous interaction with students from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. On Monday, teachers will be available for synchronous interaction with all students from 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm. All groups - Parents will be responsible for picking up and dropping off materials needed for remote

  • learning. For example, this may include picking up and returning assignments that cannot be

submitted electronically. Each building will communicate procedures with parents.

Home School Instruction

Parents have the right to home school students. However, the district provides no recommendations, materials, or supports with this option. If you wish to homeschool your child, please contact the Regional Office of Education (217)243-1804.

PPE

Per guidance from ISBE, face coverings are NOT optional indoors.

  • Masks are always to be worn in our buildings
  • Face protection is required even when you can maintain social distance
  • As of 6/30/20 - Face shields are not permissible

Masks need to be appropriate for the school environment. Halloween masks and masks with inappropriate images and/or language will not be permitted.

Transportation

Bus pick up and drop off times and locations will be posted in Skyward on or around August 18th. There will be a 50 person maximum on the bus.

Screening

We will likely have families self-certify that they are checking temperatures. More information will be provided as we get closer to the school year.

Attendance & Grading

Students are expected to attend in person school or remote learning every day. Daily attendance will be taken for both and entered into Skyward. Truancy guidelines will continue to be followed for both

  • ptions.

Students enrolled in either learning option will be expected to complete learning activities in accordance with teacher expectations. Learning activities will be assessed and grades assigned as they were before the school closure. Letter grades will be given for all classes and will count towards GPA.

Special Services

A high priority will be placed on providing in-person instruction for students who have Individualized Education Programs (IEP’s) and 504 Plans. Individualized considerations may include remote instruction for medically fragile students and students who demonstrate behaviors that may lead to safety concerns for staff and students. All meetings will occur as scheduled by the case managers and administrators. Meetings will be held virtually, as much as possible. All IEP meetings will continue to be held in accordance with special education timelines. All appointments and meetings with school staff will be scheduled in advance. Students who have chronic medical conditions will have their individual situation assessed by the school nurse. Health Care Plans, Individual Education Plans, 504 Plans, and any other relevant documentation will be reviewed. Schools will contact the student’s parents/guardians as well as the student’s physician, if needed. All students will be required to wear a face mask in accordance with the ISBE-IDPH guidelines. Should parents/guardians provide documentation from their child’s physician stating that wearing a face mask would pose a significant health risk to the student, the IEP and/or 504 team will meet to consider the recommendation. Adjustments will be made to the student’s plan as determined appropriate by the IEP and/or the 504 team. Individualized Remoted Learning Plans will be developed and modified as needed to address each student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Each Remote Learning Plan will be individualized and

work to address IEP goals and consider accommodations/modifications that are needed for access to remote or a blended in-person learning model. These Remote Learning Plans will identify what services will be provided to each student. Students who receive related service minutes in the IEP will receive services using consultation/collaboration with case managers, video conferencing, hands-on tasks provided by the therapists, online materials, or materials that have been provided for families. District 117 staff will continue to work collaboratively with Four Rivers service providers to deliver services to all our students.

Visitors & Field Trips

Outside visitors will have extremely limited access to District 117 property. Visitors will be required to self-certify their health, wear a mask, and are highly encouraged to make an appointment before entering any building. Until further notice, students will not be engaging in field trips due to health concerns.

Parent Survey

A parent survey will be emailed out August 7th. We are asking that results be turned in by Friday, August 14th. If you would like a paper survey mailed to your home, please contact the Central Office

  • r your building principal.

Parent Agreements

If students are attending in person:

  • Your child’s likeness may appear on recordings posted online for instructional purposes.
  • You will certify that your child is COVID symptom free before heading to school and has not

had a temperature for the past 48 hours.

  • Your child will wear a mask as mandated by IDPH while attending school.
  • Your child will follow all safety protocols.
  • If a student demonstrates the inability to comply with any of the above guidelines, they may

be assigned to remote learning. If students are attending remotely:

  • Attendance will be taken daily for all students.
  • Student work will be graded.
  • Parents are responsible for picking up and dropping off materials needed for remote learning.
  • Chromebooks will be provided for students if needed.
  • There are certain classes that will not be offered through remote learning.
  • JHS students may be required to come to school after the other students leave to take unit

assessments if they want the class to count toward GPA.

  • If you choose remote instruction, and you do not have adequate internet access, please

contact your building administrator.

Food

Breakfast

  • Elementary - Will be available for students to eat in their classrooms when they arrive.
  • JMS & JHS - Will be “grab and go” style. Students will eat in their first period of the day

  • Remote - The district will develop a distribution system.

Lunch

  • Elementary - Will be served and eaten in their classrooms. They may bring lunch from home if

they prefer.

  • JMS & JHS - Will be “grab and go” style as students leave for the day.

Water Fountains

Water fountains will be out-of-service, so students are encouraged to bring reusable, clear water bottles to school. Water bottles may be filled periodically throughout the day from bottle-filling stations.

Recess

Recess will not be tied to lunch. Administrators and teachers will schedule outside time for students in elementary school. Playground equipment will not be available for play during this time. Students will be encouraged to walk, play with sidewalk chalk, etc. during this time.

The District will keep a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document to both update the community

  • n more detailed information and further clarify these issues as needed. When the FAQ is updated,

an updated version will be posted and emailed to the community.
