The tourist demand and offer in Călimăneşti – Căciulata spa Tourism activities – brief introduction about Valcea county Regarding the tourism infrastructure at South-West Region level and Vâlcea County level there can be registered the following tendencies: At 2003 level, South-West Region totalize 5.5% from Romanian accommodation places, 6.4% from tourist circulation and 9.2% from overnights number registered in Romania, having a capacity utilization index which is superior to the country average, respectively 44.4 compared to 34.6%. At 2003 level, the tourist activity in Vâlcea County is unfolding in 119 accommodation units, with an accommodation capacity of 4,409 places, in decrease by 21.9% compared with 1991, due to retrocession of some villas to former owners from Govora spa and Olăneşti spa, as well to the removal from tourist circuit of some villas from Govora spa, as a consequence of inadequate accommodation conditions. Vâlcea County totalized 3.9 from Romania accommodation capacity (70,7% of regional accommodation capacity) and it has the most developed tourist infrastructure in the region. The tourist circulation at Vâlcea County level registered falls from year to year (compared to 1991 the reduction was 47.2%). The tourists number arrived in the county at 2003 level amounted to 188,362, which stand for 3.7% of tourist circuit in Romania and 58.1% of the regional one. Average length of stays in Vâlcea County is higher to the national and regional average because of the powerful influence exerted by the balneary tourism, where can be found over 9 days lengths. The capacity utilization index is 53.9% in Vâlcea County which is higher than the regional one (44.4%) and than the national one (34.6%). Moreover, the tourist offer in Vâlcea County, diverse and generous, is addressing all social categories, from mountain sports fans to the old age representatives, for whom the Vâlcea watering places microclimate are truly a blessing. Valcea is the lowest county affected by a decrease in tourist activities. Decreasing trends registered in tourism are mitigated by the so-called “social tourism” which represents the flow of tourists visiting the region thanks to the state budget subsidies. In fact, the accommodation in balneary spas is subject to subsidies provided for persons that suffer from specific diseases and for elderly people. This segment of tourism is, by definition, characterized by reduced costs (in Valcea 52% of total accommodation places and 70% of the number of balneary spa tourists). Therefore the regional strategy supports the diversification of mountain regional tourism and in localities, limiting the public investments in spas by means of projects demonstrating a high degree of return on investment – at present there is no project in the regional portfolio for balneary spas).

Perspectives of the support and development of balneary tourism at Călimăneşti – Căciulata level From a comparative analysis of the reception tourism types and the accommodation tariffs applied at the level of Călimăneşti – Căciulata resort and the competitive resorts are arising some important aspects, as follows: Under the tarif – accommodation services report, Călimăneşti – Căciulata offers a various range of tariffs, competitive with the tariffs of competitive resorts. Also, the accommodation units from the resort are offering advantageous batch

  • f services for the season and in the off season.

The resort is addressing all types of tourists, both the ones with average and under average incomes (the offer of the accommodation units of 1* and 2* level), but also the ones with over average incomes (the offer of the accommodation units of 3* and 4* level). The presence of more types of accommodation units, respectively hotels, motels, villas, pensions, stops, tourist chalets, cots, hence a bigger offer regarding the accommodation tariffs. Equally, under the report of balneary and treatment installations, compared with his main competitors, Călimăneşti – Căciulata resort presents the advantage of a trig treatment base, with the necessary facilities for the treatment of diverse digestive, rheumatoid, respiratory, gynaecological etc affections. Therefore, the leisure development in Călimăneşti – Căciulata resort is becoming a necessity, thanks to the: Leisure facilities and arranging are ancient, anaesthetic and out dated; Leisure facilities, along with the recreational – amusement side have an adjuvant character in medical therapy; The competitiveness of the resort derives also from a leisure component, powerful and diverse, if are taken into account as well the accompaniments

  • f the ones coming here for treatment and children.

We can conclude that Călimăneşti – Căciulata resort depends on the subsidy measures for the patients and guests through the social insurances system. The privatization of state industry will probably destroy this market and new customers will have to be found so these resorts remain viable. Within the Occidental Europe, especially in Germany, France and Italy, there is a large market that has potential for balneary treatment and leisure. On the other way, can be attracted also other segments of Romanian tourists. The people, physically capable of work, but having working places that do not allow them to move, are a considerable potential for this market development. These persons are looking for maintenance and stress relief programmes, within some facilities and attractive spas and with a high standard. First of all we must say that the general standard of the resort facilities is rather low and has to be developed if the take over of these markets is aimed at. The future of this resort will be supported on direct or complementary investments. It is urgent to improve and modernise the accommodation and facilities and also

infrastructure (roads, sewerage and water, heating networks) and development of the

  • pened public streets and roads.

The resort will have to improve the standard and to offer as well other activities and more attractive complementary attractions. The balneary product must be gradually reoriented towards keeping physical form, health and preventive medicine and towards developing some connected tourist attractions, keeping improvement, creating flowers and bushes areas and towards developing alleys and benches works. Projects The projects which are in course of implementation and the projects which we are planning to implement in future will have as an end a modern tourist infrastructure, built up on the principles of sustainable development, achieving the following concrete results:

  • The Convention Centre North Oltenia – a compplex meant to assure the space

necessary to organize expositions, bussiness meetings, bussines fairs, and so providing un important number of tourists to our resort, though this type of tourism shall resemblance more with the week-end or with the circulation/transit tourism.

  • Călimăneşti Central Park, landscaping rehabilitated, taking a spiritual

dimension that will complete the historic dimension, already predominant, as a result of the patrimony building that the Central Pavilion surrounds.

  • Căciulata Park, landscaping thought so that it will have revalorised both the

function of mineral water “source” (because it surrounds the biggest mineral water springs in the spa) and of promenade and relaxing

  • A leisure and sport area
  • Two pedestrian routes arranged for promenade on the bank of Olt river –

between the Căciulata Hotels Complex and Căciulata Park, respectively, in the leisure and sport area - in total length of about 5 km.

  • Two Tourism Centres, meanted to give the informations regarding the touristic
  • bjectives from Calimanesti and from the neighbour areas to all the tourists.
  • A project which implies building a spa with with big dimenssions, some

centres in which relaxation will be one of the purposes. Ths project, named Olt’s Charm, is going to assure un increasing number of tourist to our resort, because by it the services offered to tourists will be more than satisfying. These results will have a positive and lasting impact on local land national level, thus: In environmental field: The parks of the resort, Central and Izvoarele, the leisure and sport area, will become a complete ecological area, for resting and recreation of the tourists. The tourists circulation in the most interesting area of the spa will be done in a civilised way, without the existence of accidents danger In economic field: The tourist area will become predominant in the town economy

Conclusions After reading this brief presentation of Calimanesti Caciulata you can conclude that this resort can be a place where tourits can relax, treat their disseases, admire the nature and its beauties, in one word, can have a nice vacation. When you want to find out things about Calimanesti is enough to look informations about balneological treatment in Romania and you will see that Calimanesti is one of the most important resorts where this type of treatment can be made. And that is a thing well known, considering that Calimanesti is named “The Pearl form the Olt River’s Valley”. The projects we are implementing at this moment and the ones which we plan to develop in future have the role to increase the economy in our town and to increase the touristic potential of Calimanesti resort. Although for a long period of time this resort hasn’t been very popular, mostly because the publicity and the lack of quality services were present, in the past years we can say that tourism has grown. There are a lot of investors who decided to start in this resort their businesses and by that, the level of economics has grownn, along with the services offered to potential tourist.
