partners (Plymouth Argyle Football Club’s Argyle Community Trust) to ensure that you have the very best learning experience, with sessions delivered by both academic staff, and industry professionals. This helps us deliver a blend of academic learning and industry expertise to students on our football coaching degree. This academic programme considers the role of football within the wider sports industry and provides lots of opportunities to apply theory to practice in real-life situations in football development projects, coaching, and performance analysis. You will also get the chance to gain a number of football coaching qualifications alongside the comprehensive academic and industry programme. These will improve your practice and boost employability prospects. You will be able to run football development programmes, organise events, and develop a critical understanding of how the football industry works through the programme’s strong academic underpinning. You will gain skills and experiences to improve your communication, leadership, and teamwork, alongside developing research and evaluation skills - all key aspects that are valued by future employers. Our students are offered the chance to gain an array of industry-recognised football coaching qualifications. It’s all part of our commitment to boosting students’ employability and delivering the richest learning experience possible During the course, you’ll delve into a wealth of football-related topics including issues affecting coaches, plus the general administration, development and governance of football as a whole. You will also be introduced to the application of sport science principles, performance analysis, and football event management and their role in the successful development of football programmes and initiatives.

Plymouth Argyle Community Trust

Plymouth Argyle Community Trust has been functioning since 1992. Originally under the guidance of the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) to help raise participation in football and engage with fans and fans for the future. It started as non profit organisation and is now a registered sports charity. The Trust’s social objectives are for the benefit of everyone in the local community, promoting inclusion; improving health and education through sport; and generally to raise sports participation levels. The Argyle Community Trust aim to have a positive impact on a range of groups within society. They aim to provide the local community with the opportunity to explore their full potential; improve their life chances and increase their future choices and aspirations through the power of football and sport. Argyle Community Trust currently employ over 41 permanent staff members who deliver a number of sports, health, education and inclusive projects across Devon and Cornwall.

Employability

Plymouth Argyle FC is involved in a number of national initiatives with key partners such as the Football League Trust, Premier League Charitable Fund, Sport England and other key national

  • agencies. This enables us to provide exposure for BA Football Development and Coaching

students in a number of national initiatives including :- Kicks, National Citizen Service and many more. Giving students access to workshops, practical sessions and planning enables them to utilise these skills and experiences to enhance their employability within football industry within both a national and international context. There are more than 90 Community Trusts based at football clubs both in professional and non professional clubs with many of them having a large pool of staff in a number of different roles. Through a number of degree programmes Argyle Community Trust has employed 20+ graduates from the University of St Mark and St John within the past two/three years on part time and full time contracts. The foundation for this is due to the exposure students experience within the club whilst at university coupled with the theoretical and applied knowledge from the degree.

Partnership

There is a true partnership through the BA Football Development & Coaching programme and the Argyle Community Trust. The academic staff at the University of St Mark of St John and the professional staff employed through the Argyle Community Trust ensure that students have both excellent academic and applied industry experience. In addition to the academic course, there is a training and games programmes where students will get the opportunity to participate in regular coaching sessions EVERY Monday night 5pm -8pm and a competitive fixture programme on Wednesdays against other Universities, Football League clubs and guest teams. British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) is the national governing body for Higher Education (HE) sport in the UK, a membership organisation, and a company limited by guarantee with charitable status, and our vision is simple, to create the best university sport experience in the world.

A mixture of academic underpinning and insights into a professional football club enhance your employability upon completion.
