3 sets of circumstances that I might face as a classroom teacher

‘C’ makes a disclosure of sexual abuse to an adult in the school setting. Any adult observes possible indicators of neglect or abuse or changes of behaviour. Misconduct or suspected misconduct of a member of staff in school.

Adult immediately verbally reports details of the conversation to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (D.S.L) D.S.L refer immediately to Children’s Social Care. (D.S.L may check-in with to offer Nurture support.) Usually, school setting would expect to visited by Duty Social Worker/ Line manager and police that same day. Children’s Social Care then conduct their enquiry or assessment, calling on school setting as and when required. School kept updated as to where the case will go and actions to be taken. Any adult observes possible indicators of neglect or abuse or changes of behaviour. Question behaviours – Could be to ‘C’ eg. “That’s not like you to do/seem… Is there anything I can help with?” Could be to a closer adult eg. “I noticed ‘C’…what do you think?” Observations/ outcomes of communications/ answers to questions documented and recorded on CPOMS – directed to relevant staff. ‘C’ is further observed, behaviours monitored and recorded via CPOMs ensuring relevant staff continually updated (pastoral, senior staff, other staff working with child). Interventions may be offered/put in place within the school if appropriate, eg. mentoring 1:1 or group mentoring. There could be multiagency input based on outcomes (eg. Common Assessment Framework - CAF) DfE, 2015) pp.12

Child protection software – Tool for building a picture, mapping need, identifying areas for possible intervention.

Rare, but it does happen that school challenges the outcome of a referral , over view provides evidence for conversations. Supports C.A.F process and Education and Health Plan application.
