National Campaign

Why we started?

  • Our National 2009/2010 Immunization

results were 62%

  • We didn’t feel as though this was

meeting our mission and vision of ‘Helping People Live Better’

  • H1N1 hype in 2009/2010 caused

confusion and caused a drop in our staff immunization rates

Halton Hills - Our 2012/2013 Journey

  • 2012/2013
  • Management team buy-in
  • Created an AIM:
  • Our ’Bug free journey’ goal of having 141/166 (85%) staff vaccinated by November

15,2012

  • How?

– Educate Staff: Sept 15th held an education session with

  • ur local Public Health Inspector; provided staff with flu fact sheets.

– Preparation Work-Up on Documentation: Resident List/ Staff List, Medical Directives/Physician’s Orders/Supplies on Hand. – Leadership in the home – all managers get their shot starting with the Administrator to send a good example.

  • Updated staff on numbers frequently; on average every 2 days throughout the journey.
  • Each manager was given accountability for their staff immunization, including following

up on status.

  • Had staff lists with contact information in order to call them at home to contact them and

find out what barriers are present in receipt of flu shot (ie medical reason, religious/cultural beliefs).- ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Assigned a Registered Staff member to come in on days and evenings to increase

accessibility.

Challenges/Improvements

  • Improvements in the year 2012-2013 compared to

previous:

  • Staff Lists
  • Coordinating Clinics –mobile and extra RPN.
  • Education and more education: Some staff didn’t want to put “that

stuff” in their body – educated to combat their preconceived ideas.

  • Charge Nurses or more senior nurses against vaccine – they can

become verbal and send that message to frontline staff: difficult conversations.

  • Challenges that will lead to change for 2013-2014:
  • Private Care Staff: Better tracking of their numbers in the home;

even if we do not count them as staff-if due to an outbreak and they would like to come in, we need proof of immunization.

  • Our 141st staff that brought us to 85% on

November 14th 2012.
