The mouth is an indicator of general health. An unhealthy mouth will effect a person both physically and mentally. A healthy mouth:

 Allows enjoyable eating of regular nutritious meals  Promotes confidence in appearance, eating and speaking  Prevents oral infections that may affect general health and wellbeing  Permits clear speech  Allows for good development in children

  • Brush teeth last thing at night and on at least one other

Smear for under 3’s and pea sized amount for over 3’s.

  • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks,

try keep to meal times

  • Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

Displaying information in staff/parent areas around heathy eating, good oral health Through policies around heathy eating – NICE Guidance available

  • Use the free resources and staff training available from local oral health

team and national services

  • Promote drinking of milk and water during school/working day and to

continue at home.

  • Swap sugar for sweetener in tea and coffee
  • Use sugar free/low sugar drinks

vending machines

  • Promote tooth brushing at home 2 x daily
  • Allow and support attendance to dental appointments during school/work

Although aimed at dental practices it is a very useful tool for other health practitioners to ensure that they are providing the best oral care plans for their client group.
