Jade Quinn

After Jade left Hillside she gained A levels in Psychology, Sociology, French and English then went on to University where she gained a BA(Hons) in Sociology with Childhood and Youth Services. She is now studying for a BSc in Health and Social Care and her ambition is to be a Social Worker. She said “Hillside

  • pened many job opportunities for me.

French and Spanish were my favourite subjects and I thought I would I would pursue them but in the end I have chosen a different career path”

Glen Wild

Since Glen left school he has been involved in performing both on stage and television as well as a successful career as a Stand Up comedian on the North West comedy circuit. He came back to Hillside and had a chat with the GCSE drama students about the business and the best ways to get started which he said “was humbling”. He hopes to be taken on by a London based agent and plans to relocate to London soon for performing work. He said, “I have to give Mrs Carey-Shields a mention for introducing me to the business... If I ever make it in to Hollywood, she can take early retirement!“

Alumni News ‘The Class of 2009’

At school we often wonder what happens to our students after they leave. Many, of course, have younger brothers and sisters at school who keep us updated and we sometimes hear interesting snippets ‘on the grapevine’. We were delighted when three ex students got in touch to let us know what they were up to.

slide-9
SLIDE 9

What these responses show is that Hillside is a school where the ethos of hard work and achievement is firmly embedded in students right from the start, so that when they leave they can go on to fulfil their hopes and dreams. From these comments, staff at Hillside know that all their hard work and dedication means so much to the many students who pass through our school. Success is measured not only by academic standards but also by the knowledge that hundreds of our former students are living and working in the community and contributing in many different ways. We were so pleased to hear from our class of 2009 and wish them and all our past students the best

  • f luck for the future.

Amy Evans

After Amy left Hillside she gained A levels in Psychology, History and Law. After a spell

  • f Charity work Amy now works for Sefton
  • Council. She was always a keen performer

at Hillside and continues her association with the theatre. She says, “Hillside helped me on my way, as I was very shy when I started, all the staff were kind and I had many tremendous opportunities. I left school confident, ready to take on the world but also to remember to help other people. This is what Hillside taught me.” Emily Woodruff

Since leaving Hillside Emily gained A levels in Politics, Geography and Psychology before going on to complete a BA (Hons) degree in Politics with Human Geography. Whilst working hard on her academic studies she found time to earn a Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. Her ambition is to become a Primary School teacher. She says that her favourite subject at Hillside was Geography.

A short history of our school and some

  • f the prizes to be awarded

Bootle Secondary School for Girls was established in the late 19th century. It moved to its present site here on Breeze Hill in 1932 and became The Grammar School for Girls in 1944. It amalgamated with Balliol Secondary Modern School in 1972 to form Hillside High School. Over the years three trust funds were established to provide prizes for students in honour of past teachers and governors:  Gwladys Williams was born in Bangor, North Wales. She became a teacher at Bootle Secondary School for Girls in 1897 after teaching for two years in Leeds. She taught a range of subjects that included Mathematics, Scripture and Needlework and spent all of the rest of her teaching career at this school.  Kathleen Watson was born on Merseyside and was a student at the Girls Secondary School from 1910 to 1916. She returned as an assistant teacher in the junior department in 1923 and by 1935 was a senior mistress in the preparatory department. During the Second World War she accompanied children who had been evacuated, returning here to teach in 1942. She continued working here until her early death at the age of 49 in 1947.  G A Rogers was a governor of the Girls Secondary School when it moved to the new building in Breeze Hill in 1932. He was a local Councillor and a member of the Higher Education Committee. To commemorate our 80th ‘Birthday’ in 2012, two new prizes were established  Laetitia Shemilt was Headteacher here from 1998 until 2013. She decided that her prize should be for kindness, a quality that she valued most highly.  John Phillips taught here for 40 years until his retirement in 2011. He was passionate about encouraging Bootle students to experience cultures other than their own and requested that his prize be for cultural awareness. Three prizes are given in memory of past students.  Tim Stephens joined Hillside with his brothers Jonathan and Simon when his father became Vicar at St Matthew’s Church. He was an extremely talented student who also had a fine sense of humour and was liked by all who knew him. He played a leading role in drama productions and achieved the best GCSE results for his year. He was tragically killed following a traffic accident

  • n Southport Road.

 Lee Nicol was in Year 9 when he died as a result of injuries sustained in the Hillsborough tragedy in 1989. Lee was an extremely keen and dedicated Liverpool supporter, lively and outgoing. A local businessman kindly donated the cup in his memory.  Luke Eccleston died suddenly and tragically whilst taking part in our summer club in 2009. We will never forget Luke and at the request of his family we established an Eco Award to be given to the student who has shown most interest in helping to improve our environment. This is a very appropriate award as Luke was a founder member of our Eco club and designed the logo for

  • ur eco magazine.
