Why ¡is ¡Power ¡Important? ¡

The ¡lack ¡of ¡power ¡causes ¡poverty: ¡ ¡

• It ¡is ¡hard ¡to ¡water ¡your ¡fields, ¡so ¡you ¡have ¡too ¡little ¡

food ¡to ¡eat ¡or ¡sell ¡– ¡You ¡ ¡need ¡power ¡to ¡pump ¡water ¡

• You ¡can’t ¡learn ¡how ¡to ¡use ¡new ¡technology, ¡because ¡

there ¡is ¡no ¡power ¡to ¡run ¡machines ¡or ¡to ¡power ¡

• computers. ¡ ¡
• You ¡can’t ¡go ¡to ¡school, ¡because ¡you ¡need ¡to ¡spend ¡

time ¡every ¡day ¡collecting ¡firewood ¡and ¡carrying ¡ water ¡to ¡you ¡home. ¡ ¡

• Most ¡of ¡the ¡time ¡the ¡water ¡is ¡dirty ¡and ¡you ¡get ¡sick ¡

from ¡drinking ¡it. ¡Power ¡can ¡help ¡you ¡filter ¡water. ¡

Why ¡is ¡Power ¡Important?

If ¡you ¡DO ¡get ¡to ¡school, ¡you ¡can’t ¡do ¡your ¡homework ¡ because ¡as ¡soon ¡as ¡the ¡sun ¡goes ¡down, ¡there’s ¡no ¡ light ¡to ¡read ¡or ¡write ¡by. ¡ ¡

• Without ¡a ¡good ¡education, ¡you ¡can’t ¡get ¡a ¡good ¡job. ¡ ¡
• Some ¡families ¡light ¡their ¡homes ¡with ¡paraffin ¡

lanterns, ¡like ¡Victorians ¡used ¡to: ¡but ¡paraffin ¡is ¡ expensive, ¡so ¡very ¡few ¡people ¡can ¡afford ¡it. ¡ ¡ ¡ And ¡the ¡fumes ¡from ¡the ¡lanterns ¡make ¡it ¡hard ¡to ¡ breath ¡and ¡can ¡make ¡you ¡sick. ¡Up ¡to ¡two ¡million ¡ people ¡die ¡from ¡breathing ¡toxic ¡fumes ¡each ¡year. ¡

• Without ¡power, ¡people ¡also ¡can’t ¡filter ¡water: ¡they ¡

risk ¡disease ¡every ¡time ¡they ¡drink. ¡

But ¡with ¡power, ¡you ¡can ¡grow ¡more ¡crops, ¡ get ¡a ¡better ¡education, ¡stay ¡healthy ¡and ¡ train ¡in ¡new ¡skills. ¡You ¡can ¡raise ¡more ¡ money ¡to ¡have ¡a ¡happier, ¡safer, ¡life… ¡

• This ¡is ¡what ¡Renewable ¡World ¡is ¡helping ¡

people ¡to ¡do ¡

Think ¡about ¡what ¡the ¡things ¡are ¡ that ¡you ¡would ¡NOT ¡be ¡able ¡to ¡do ¡if ¡ you ¡did ¡not ¡have ¡any ¡electricity ¡at ¡ home? ¡ Is ¡power ¡important?

How ¡Do ¡we ¡Do ¡It? ¡ ¡

We ¡visit ¡communities ¡without ¡access ¡to ¡power, ¡and ¡ask ¡them ¡ what ¡they ¡need ¡most. ¡Every ¡time ¡it’s ¡a ¡little ¡bit ¡different ¡ depending ¡on ¡their ¡priorities. ¡ ¡

• Some ¡want ¡to ¡set ¡up ¡a ¡business ¡where ¡people ¡can ¡charge ¡

their ¡phones. ¡ ¡ Some ¡want ¡to ¡power ¡refrigerators ¡to ¡store ¡their ¡fish ¡or ¡ vegetables ¡so ¡they ¡get ¡a ¡better ¡price. ¡ ¡ Some ¡want ¡to ¡run ¡a ¡computer ¡centre ¡so ¡people ¡can ¡learn. ¡ ¡

• But ¡all ¡of ¡them ¡use ¡the ¡power ¡to ¡pump ¡and ¡filter ¡water, ¡and ¡ ¡

to ¡light ¡their ¡homes. ¡SO ¡this ¡is ¡where ¡we ¡start. ¡ ¡

• We ¡work ¡with ¡local ¡partners ¡to ¡install ¡solar ¡panels, ¡ ¡

wind ¡turbines, ¡hydraulic ¡water ¡pumps ¡– ¡and ¡biogas ¡systems ¡ to ¡bring ¡the ¡power ¡to ¡the ¡communities ¡

Why ¡do ¡we ¡use ¡Renewable ¡Energy ¡Systems? ¡

We ¡know ¡power ¡is ¡vital. ¡But ¡we ¡also ¡know ¡traditional ¡ways ¡

• f ¡generating ¡power ¡– ¡from ¡coal ¡and ¡oil ¡-­‑ ¡causes ¡climate ¡
• change. ¡ ¡
• Climate ¡change ¡is ¡a ¡threat ¡to ¡us ¡all. ¡But ¡it’s ¡the ¡people ¡in ¡

the ¡poorest ¡countries ¡and ¡mores ¡remote ¡communities ¡that ¡ suffer ¡the ¡most. ¡ ¡

• So, ¡we ¡provide ¡those ¡communities ¡with ¡the ¡power ¡they ¡

need, ¡without ¡causing ¡more ¡ ¡climate ¡change. ¡

• There ¡is ¡another ¡advantage: ¡the ¡systems ¡are ¡small, ¡and ¡the ¡

communities ¡themselves ¡will ¡look ¡after ¡them. ¡We ¡train ¡ them ¡to ¡use ¡new ¡technology, ¡and ¡how ¡to ¡fix ¡it. ¡These ¡are ¡ skills ¡they ¡can ¡use ¡to ¡get ¡better ¡jobs ¡and ¡earn ¡more ¡money ¡ for ¡themselves, ¡their ¡families ¡and ¡their ¡communities…

How ¡Have ¡We ¡Helped? ¡

In ¡Nepal ¡we ¡have ¡set ¡up ¡systems ¡to ¡push ¡water ¡up ¡hill! ¡

• It’s ¡called ¡a ¡Hydraulic ¡Ram ¡or ¡Hydram ¡for ¡short. ¡ ¡
• Nepal ¡is ¡a ¡really ¡hilly ¡country ¡and ¡many ¡communities ¡on ¡

the ¡top ¡of ¡the ¡hills ¡don’t ¡have ¡a ¡water ¡supply ¡and ¡need ¡to ¡ carry ¡water ¡from ¡the ¡bottom ¡of ¡the ¡hill ¡to ¡the ¡top. ¡ ¡

• This ¡is ¡really ¡exhausting ¡work ¡and ¡takes ¡a ¡long ¡time. ¡ ¡
• The ¡priority ¡is ¡to ¡water ¡their ¡crops ¡and ¡have ¡water ¡to ¡drink ¡

and ¡cook ¡with. ¡ ¡

• This ¡means ¡there ¡is ¡usually ¡ ¡not ¡enough ¡water ¡to ¡wash ¡

clothes, ¡take ¡a ¡bath ¡and ¡the ¡water ¡is ¡usually ¡really ¡dirty ¡so ¡ when ¡people ¡do ¡drink ¡it ¡they ¡get ¡sick. ¡ ¡

Renewable ¡World: ¡an ¡introduction

They ¡Hydram ¡system ¡uses ¡the ¡power ¡of ¡water ¡ flowing ¡down ¡hill ¡to ¡push ¡water ¡back ¡up ¡hill ¡through ¡ a ¡pipe. ¡ ¡

• It ¡is ¡a ¡really ¡old ¡technology ¡that ¡we ¡have ¡adapted ¡to ¡

be ¡used ¡in ¡Nepal. ¡Between ¡1,000 ¡– ¡10,000 ¡litres ¡of ¡ water ¡can ¡be ¡pushed ¡up ¡hill ¡in ¡a ¡single ¡day ¡by ¡using ¡ this ¡technology. ¡

• Because ¡it ¡only ¡uses ¡the ¡water’s ¡power ¡to ¡pump ¡

water, ¡it ¡is ¡environmentally ¡friendly, ¡renewable ¡and ¡ gets ¡rid ¡of ¡any ¡of ¡the ¡high ¡costs ¡associated ¡with ¡more ¡ common ¡diesel ¡generator ¡pumps. ¡ ¡

• Water ¡is ¡then ¡collected ¡in ¡a ¡tank ¡from ¡where ¡it ¡can ¡

be ¡distributed ¡across ¡the ¡community ¡for ¡household ¡ use, ¡irrigation ¡and ¡income ¡generating ¡activities. ¡

How ¡Does ¡This ¡Help? ¡

The ¡hydram ¡helps ¡a ¡community ¡in ¡many ¡ways: ¡ ¡

• Fields ¡can ¡be ¡irrigated ¡
• Farmers ¡get ¡more ¡crops ¡from ¡their ¡fields ¡
• They ¡have ¡more ¡food ¡to ¡feed ¡their ¡families ¡ ¡
• And ¡more ¡food ¡to ¡sell ¡at ¡the ¡market ¡– ¡so ¡they ¡get ¡more ¡money ¡ ¡
• Women ¡and ¡children ¡don’t ¡need ¡to ¡spend ¡time ¡carrying ¡water ¡uphill ¡
• Children ¡can ¡spend ¡time ¡going ¡to ¡school ¡ ¡
• There ¡is ¡a ¡regular ¡supply ¡of ¡water ¡for ¡drinking, ¡cooking, ¡and ¡washing ¡
• Women ¡and ¡Men ¡in ¡the ¡community ¡get ¡training ¡in ¡a ¡new ¡technology, ¡they ¡learn ¡

how ¡to ¡manage ¡an ¡organisation ¡and ¡gain ¡status ¡within ¡their ¡community. ¡ ¡

In ¡Other ¡Parts ¡of ¡the ¡World

How ¡have ¡we ¡helped? ¡On ¡the ¡banks ¡of ¡Lake ¡Victoria, ¡in ¡Kenya, ¡we ¡ ¡ are ¡working ¡with ¡six ¡communities. ¡We ¡are ¡providing ¡power ¡from ¡ ¡ solar ¡panels ¡and ¡wind ¡turbines, ¡which ¡they ¡are ¡using ¡to ¡cut ¡disease ¡ ¡ by ¡filtering ¡water, ¡pump ¡water ¡to ¡homes ¡and ¡fields ¡to ¡water ¡crops, ¡ ¡ provide ¡lights ¡for ¡homes, ¡so ¡they ¡no ¡longer ¡need ¡to ¡burn ¡paraffin, ¡ ¡ improve ¡education ¡and ¡business ¡opportunities ¡ ¡ and… ¡chill ¡fish. ¡

• The ¡communities ¡are ¡investing ¡in ¡fridges, ¡because ¡they ¡rely ¡on ¡ ¡

fish ¡to ¡sell ¡at ¡market. ¡But ¡in ¡a ¡hot ¡country ¡like ¡Kenya, ¡no-­‑one ¡ ¡ wants ¡a ¡day-­‑old ¡fish. ¡ ¡

• But ¡if ¡the ¡fish ¡is ¡kept ¡fresh ¡in ¡the ¡fridge, ¡it ¡keeps ¡its ¡value ¡for ¡ ¡
• longer. ¡Just ¡one ¡fridge, ¡powered ¡by ¡our ¡systems, ¡is ¡worth ¡ ¡

$320 ¡per ¡year ¡per ¡fisherman, ¡for ¡up ¡to ¡45 ¡fishermen. ¡
