  • Phase 2 – Where are we

now?

  • Phase 3 – Where do we

want to go?

LAND USE PLANNING & GIS

  • Analytical and modelling tool.
  • It is useful in monitoring of an area or

conducting a feasibility study of a

location for a specific purpose. E.g.

ascertaining the suitability of a location for the construction of schools, hospitals, etc.

  • Allows Planners to visualise alternative

scenarios to compare the outcomes and make decisions

MAIN CONSTRAINT

  • Today, the main constraint on the use of

GIS in urban planning is the availability and sharing of data.

  • For Developed Countries, Spatial Data can

be downloaded online!

  • However, for developing countries like Fiji,

Spatial Data Sharing is still an issue.

  • “A Better Fiji for All”

requires “Data

Sharing”

CONCLUSION

  • “Urban and regional planning underlies the

very fabric of society as we know it today. Without planning and foresight, our cities, towns, rural areas, and residential communities will not run efficiently. While communities today face many challenges, it is the Planner’s job to address such problems and provide viable solutions for today and the future.” Dr. Christopher Pettit
