Presentation Skills Game

RULES

Unemployment is a major problem in many countries. Finding a job or starting your own company can be particularily difficult when presenting & communicating your skills in front of an employer or potential investors. GAME4U main objective is to create a learning environment (game/simulation) which simulates the communication and presentation skills process and stimulates the development of entrepreneurial attitudes and competences.

RULES of the Game – GAME4U

«Game4U» is an EU strategic partnership project between fjve countries which was fjnanced by the EU Erasmus plus program. Game4U is an educational gami- fjcation tool especially designed with non-formal learning activities in mind, and they consequently lean towards competition (agon) and role-playing (mimic- ry). Many people have problems with presentaton & communication skills (soft skills). In particular when seeking employment, presenting an idea or a company product as well as an entrepreneur seeking fjnance for his start-up. This is a competitive game where teams or individual players compete with each

  • ther in order to improve in a structured way their presentation & communica-

tion skills. In this game we will simulate real life events where players will make presentations and communicate with business investors in order to fjnance an entrepreneurial project. The game needs an instructor or Game Master, who manages all aspects of the game including potential tensions between players. Of course excessive com- petition would be detrimental to normal activities, but there must be a sensible level of competition and role-playing, including acting for the game to actually become alive thus refmecting reality. What that level is depends on the players and on the ability as a Game Master to manage the sessions. The game has two activities The fjrst activity is a competitive role playing game where individual players compete with each other and each player has to make his own presentation.

slide-3
SLIDE 3

3

The second activity is a collaborative role playing game where teams have to interact with other teams to perform a common task. «Collaborative learning» is an umbrella term for a variety of educational approaches involving joint intel- lectual efgort by students, or students and teachers together. Usually, students are working in groups of two or more, mutually searching for understanding, solutions, or meanings, or creating a product.

PART ONE

RULES for the card game PRESENTATION SKILLS You can play either the competitive or the collaborative variant of the game. In the collaborative game the group divides in teams and each group make their

  • wn presentation. In the competitive game (it is better for smaller groups) all

participants will have to make a presentation. Resources:

  • Time in seconds - shows the limit in second for events, presentations and

investors preferences

  • Energy - shows how much energy a player or a team have and how much

they will spend to present information to the audience

  • Information - points of information show the amount of useful data that

the player has included in a slide

  • Points of interest - shows the amount of attraction that your project has

made on the audience

  • Coins - analogue of money that you can spend to improve your project
  • Charisma - character performance of a person that can increase the points
  • f interest of your presentation

TIME is marked with this sign. Every event has its own time limit for a presenta- tion - the period that is given for a speaker to make a presentation. If you will exceed the time limit you will loose the interest of the audience. Investors have their own preferences - some prefer short presentations but others prefer

  • long. Every slide card will show how much time it takes for a speaker to read and

show the information on the slide. ENERGY is marked with this sign. Shows how much force you have at the start of your speech and how much will have left in the end. If you will spend all your energy on a presentation you will have no ebergy forces left to answer the questions.

slide-4
SLIDE 4

4

How to calculate your energy? Energy = 60 years (maximum age) minus `your biological age` For example: If your biological age is 60 years, so your energy will be zero: maximum age (= 60) minus `your biological age` (= 60) = 0 (in this case your energy is zero) example: author of the game is 38 years old, so 60 - 38 = 22 points of energy For a player team: the sum of energies of every team member divided into the number of team members example: Nick is 23 years old Paula is 31 years old Professor Johanssen is 57 years old Peter is 16 years old

  • 1. (60 - 23) + (60 - 31) + (60 - 57) + (60 - 16) = 37 + 29 + 3 + 44 = 113
  • 2. 113/4 = 28,25

So the total energy of the whole team is 28 points. If you will have no energy left for the rest of your presentation and you can loose points of interest and some investors will ignore your project. INFORMATION is marked with this sign. Every slide shows how much data you can give to the audience. Every event card and every investor card shows the min- imal quantity of data that is needed to attract the audience or an investor. POINTS OF INTEREST (Pi) `Pi` is marked by two signs: one for short events and another for long events. People on difgerent events have difgerent preferences and can act difgerently. this marker is for a short event with a larger audience. A large audience does not appreciate long and diffjcult to understand presentations. They prefer presentations that provides useful information ranging from 40 to 150 seconds. It is very hard to hold the attention of a large audience for a long time. this marker is for a long presentation with a small audience. Smaller au- diences can pay more attention to projects which implies difgerent rules for collecting points of interest.

slide-5
SLIDE 5

5

`Pi` is the most important index for a team or player because it shows how much the audience is attracted by your speech. Remember that the right structure of slides in your presentation can highly increase the interest of the audience. The wrong structure will consequently decrease the interest of the audience. COINS this marker shows the cost of the extra bonus card that you can buy to improve your presentation compared to others. Every player or team re- ceives 10 coins in the beginning of the game that he or she can spend to improve their speech. Coins are analogue to money. CHARISMA this marker shows the number of points refmecting the natural quality of a speaker. If you have a great charisma it will increase the interest of your project because people will be attracted more to your presentation and decrease the spend energy because it is easier for a charismatic leader to interact with the audience. Every team or speaker will receive 6 points of charis- ma but it difgers in levels due to the level of the speakers orator skills. The team charisma is counted based on the level of the most skilled speaker. Charisma has three levels: How to fjnd your level of charisma: I - Your Charisma is low if you cannot easily interact with the audience, especially with a large audience. Players on this level can use Charisma only one time per presentation and they will loose all the points in order to gain extra points of in- terest or decrease their spent energy. You must take a decision to loose 6 points

  • f Charisma to receive 12 points of Interest or loose 6 points of Charisma to

receive 3 points of Energy. II - Your Charisma is normal if you can usually interact with a small groups of people and potential clients (up to 20). Players on this level can use Charisma two times per presentation to gain extra points of Interest or decrease spent

  • Energy. You can loose 3 points of Charisma twice in order to receive 6 points of

Interest or 2 point of Energy. III - Your Charisma is high if you can easily interact with large audiences. Players

  • n this level can use Charisma three times per presentation to gain extra points
  • f Interest or decrease spent Energy. You can loose 2 points of Charisma each

time in order to receive 4 points of Interest or 3 points of Energy. To receive optimal results in the game you have to be objective and truthful and accept your level of Charisma. It is very easy to detect fraud and to check your level of Charisma at any point of time. And it will be rather embarrassing for the player if you are not thruthful about your charisma.

CARD DECKS

1) SLIDES CARD DECK The main deck consists of 170 cards. Every card shows some information and is part of data represented as a slide from a powerpoint presentation. This deck is divided in ten groups of slides: 1. Hello - this deck contains slides that players use to start their presentation 2. Problem - this deck contains slides that players use to describe the prob- lems of a client 3. Solution - this deck contains slides that players use to show the product

  • r service that potentially solves the problem(s) of the client

4. Technology - this deck contains slides that players use to illustrate how the solution works 5. Customer - this deck contains slides that players use to describe the client

slide-7
SLIDE 7

7

6. Market - this deck contains slides that players use to show the number of potential clients/prospects 7. Demand - this deck contains slides that players use to show the project needs 8. Proposal - this deck contains slides that players use to ask for resources and/or fjnance for their project 9. Approve - this deck contains slides that players use to show the experi- ence of their project team

  • 10. Contacts - this deck contains slides that participants use to give the audi-

ence relevant information about the project Each group of cards contains slides for short and long events. They difger by the amount and type of information that you can use and tells how much energy and time a normal speaker have to spend to read a current slide. Every deck con- tains difgerent variety of slides that players have used to illustrate their projects and ideas in real life. You are allowed to read and choose a suitable variant for your presentation.

slide-8
SLIDE 8

If you will choose the correct sequence of slides you can receive extra attention

  • f the audience and increase the number of points of interest. An incorrect se-

quence make the presentation less attractive. To know if the sequence is right or wrong you can look to the left side of a slide card. FRONT OF THE CARD - shows the name of the deck and group of slides BACK OF THE CARD 2) EVENTS CARD DECK Contains 20 cards. Every card describes one particular type of event where play- ers will have to make their presentation(s). This deck is divided in two groups: short events and long events Each event has a difgerent infmuence on the behaviour of the audience. So the players will have to make the right choice of the structure and slides suitable for the current chosen type of event.

slide-9
SLIDE 9

3) INVESTORS CARD DECK Contains 20 cards that desribes difgerent types of business angels and venture

  • capitalists. Each card contains a photo and biographic data of the investor. Each

investor will act depending on the situation card from the Events Deck. Some of them prefer long events, others prefer short events. If an investor pre- fers short events but have to attend a long event he will feel uncomfortable. In this case you will need more forces to attract them. To make them interested in your project you will need to gain extra points of Interest due to the penalties you pay for the investors interest in your presentation.

GAME PROCESS

HOW TO START THE GAME? Place on the table ten (10) decks of slides cards. Separate each group of cards. Then shuffme the cards from the deck of Events and Investors and place them

  • n a table.

At the beginning of the game take a random card from the Events deck. It will show what type of event you are invited to make a presentation as well as the number of investors in a jury. Next take card(s) from the Investors deck. The number of investors cards is written on the Event card. Also put on the table the Extra Bonus cards. Example: The players start making a composition of slides. Each team or player have to choose the most relevant for a current Event and jury slides. Your presenta- tion must be unique - so if someone has taken the same kind of slide - you will not be able to use the already taken card. To make the game easier - use more game sets.

Example of game play layout:

slide-11
SLIDE 11

11

At example the game master took the «Start- up School Pitching» card and opened one card form investor`s deck. So the gamers need to make a short presentation not longer than 40 seconds, gain minimum 5 points of information, receive not less than 10 points

  • f interest of potential investor. So the team

made a decision to use only 4 slides to pitch their idea and to pay 7 coins to promo girls to help make the presentation more attractive. Pay special attention to the difgerent tastes and preferences of the investors in the jury when preparing your pitch. Some of them prefer to receive information whilst others prefer more energetic leaders. Teams have 30 minutes to fjnd a good combination of slides. After that they count all the points. The winner of the presentation is the player(s) who gained the largest amount of points of Interest and have attracted the largest number

  • f investors.

PART TWO

RULES for the role playing game PRESENTATION SKILLS The second part of the game is a collaborative role playing game where teams have to interact with other teams to perform a common task. The game’s plot A local billionaire (the game master) decided to diversify his capital. He wants to organize a business accelerator in your region. He will invest ONE MILLION dollars in a maximum of FIVE startups depending on which team or player will make the best presentation in two separate events - Startup competition with a business angels jury and a Due diligence interview with the local billionaire. Due diligence is a comprehensive appraisal of a business undertaken by a pro- spective buyer, especially to establish its assets and liabilities and evaluate its commercial potential. He will invest only in those projects and teams that will already have twenty-fjve percent (25%) of the total requested sum invested by business angels from the fjrst event (Startup competition), which could mean that he will invest the rest

  • f the sum requested (75%)

The team works on the logical structure of the presentation.

How to play? Presentation Skills Roleplaying Game is a group game. It consists of difgerent roles that players will be able to play. 1) Choose your Role LOCAL BILLIONAIRE It is the Game Master`s role. He acts like a business incubator director. He has one million dollar to invest. His aim is to invest his million dollars in the best team(s) who will attract the largest interest of the business angels jury. He understands that if the jury prefers to invest their own money in a project(s) that they have a potential better success rate to become profjtable in the future, which means less risk for him as an investor. As a consequence he will want to support those projects that have a greater chance to win the contest in the Startup competi- tion and will pass the Due diligence test with him. Game master (GM) will choose one of the following game characters suitable to him. Choose one of the following characters: Card #195 Anyshare Cashmoneyfg Card #204 Carla Geld Card #196 Moneychild Havesome Card #207 Mo Ney Card #200 Gill Wates Card #208 Sarah Goldman Card #201 Egor Sladkiy Card #209 Nicolas Von Reichtumsheim Card #202 Al Dahab Ibn Golder Card #210 Akio Monita BUSINESS ANGEL It is a role for no more then one fjfth of the players group (it simulates the average standard number of rich people and middle class in any given society that have money to invest in risky projects). It means that every fjfth member in a players group will act in this role. Every business angel has his own capital - 200 000 $. He can either invest it partly in difgerent projects or the whole sum in one pro-

  • ject. Business angel(s) can win the game and get a return on their investments

in the future only if their chosen project(s) will receive money (75%) from the Local Billlionaire. A Business Angel invests in small start-up companies as well as entrepreneurs. Business angels are chosen from the players group. Every fjfth representative of a group plays this role. But there can be a maximum of fjve business angels. They need to act like one of the game characters suitable to them.

slide-13
SLIDE 13

13

Choose one of the following business angel characters: Card #191 Dave McAzure Card #198 Francois Precieux Card #192 Marco “Coco» Goldello Card #199 Mashdown Catcher Card #193 Ouro Investidos Card #203 Dark Coinsberg Card #194 Diamondo Mbanco Card #205 Rick Riskmissen Card #197 Starts Helpssen Card #206 John Silver PROJECT TEAMS Consist of other players with a maximum of 6 players in one team. They must act as a team in the game and compete with other players (teams) in order to receive the requested seed (start) capital from the business angels jury. A pro- ject team can make a request for capital investment from $50 000 to $2 000 000 ($1 000 000 from the billionaire and 5 x $ 200 000 from the business angels). But you must remember that the Local Billionaire will invest no more than 75% of the total requested capital. 2) Choosing the task (the mechanics of the game) The Game Master will ask the teams to create a presentation of a project that suits his business incubator. A business incubator is an organization designed to accelerate the growth and success of entrepreneurial companies through an array of business support resources and services that could include physical space, capital, coaching, common services, and networking connections. He can suggest any theme which means that the difgerent scenarios are infjnite. For example: green energy projects and eco systems or robotic systems or some new technological product. It means the teams will need to think about the idea and then create a project and a presentation. They can use the game cards as supporting material for creating a good structure for a sales pitch. Business angels have to think about their criteria and type of projects for the teams they will have to judge. Business angels have to invest no less than $50 000 per project and team (it is the minimum) and no more than $200 000. If they decide not to invest their money they will loose the game. 3) Business Angels (BA) discuss the criteria (obligatory) and their in- vesting strategy (optional) It will be a good idea if the Business Angel-teams will also create their own sales pitch presentation for the Business Incubator that they have jointly invest- ed in together with the Local Billionaire.

slide-14
SLIDE 14

14

4) Teams start to work on their presentation Players are working on presentations of their projects. They have between thirty (30) minutes to two hours for this task (Game Master decides). 5) Presentation Section 1. The Business Angel Team presents the project of the Business Accelerator (In- cubator or the company)). After this every project team presents their project. (maximum 2 minutes) This part of the game simulates the Startup Competition event where difgerent teams compete with each other in order to receive prizes (for example a diploma

  • r certifjcate) and of course most importantly any investments. Every team will

have only 2 minutes to present their presentation (must do). (PPT, fmipchart or just talk) The Game Master decides who is best. Every team will get a maximum of 5 minutes for questions from the Business

  • Angel. They must reply as best as they can to increase the interest of the Busi-

ness Angel. 6) Business Angel jury judge the projects Every Business Angel has $200 000 of his own capital. He can make a separate decision to invest all the money in one project as seed (start) capital or he can divide it between several startups like a venture capitalist. Remember that you can invest not less than $50 000 per one team! Business Angels who decide not to invest will lose the game. After having invested all his seed (start) capital the Business Angel joins one of the competing teams that he has invested in and will act as a mentor. He cannot be a mentor if he has not invested in the team. The Business Angel can jonly join one team. One team can have several mentors. (the best option depending what he prefers) The Mentor can be a speaker as part of the company that he has invested in and chosen as his favorite in order to present the team for the local billionaire. Also the Business Angel Jury can invest all their money in one project and make a collaboration. The Game Master playing the Billionaire Role is not active in this process be- cause his “character» will not invest until the team will pass the Due Diligence, which will be the next part of the game.

slide-15
SLIDE 15

15

Two teams who have received the largest investments in this part of the game will be invited to the Local Billionaire`s Offjce to make a longer presentation on Due Diligence. Other teams who have lost in this part of the game have to join the winning two teams to help them in the next part of the game. Investments that they have received as seed (start) capital from the Business Angels have to be divided equally between every member of the team including the Business Angel (pay attention) if he has joined this team. The losing team splits up and the players have to join the winning teams of their own choice with their part of seed (start) capital. 7) Preparing for the Due Diligence (DD) (collaborative and competi- tive) After every Business Angel has made a decision and has invested his money he joins one of the teams to become part of it as a mentor. Only two winning teams are invited to Due Diligence. Now two teams have a maximum of two hours to prepare a good presentation (between 6 to 15 minutes) about their projects and present it to the Local Bil- lionaire (GM) and compete in order to receive his 75% investment. The Game Master will choose a team to invest based on his own criteria. 8) Due Diligence presentation Every team has between 6 to 15 minutes (the Game Master will decide) to pres- ent their project. Every team will have a maximum of 5 minutes for questions from the Game Master. The Game Master makes a decision which he will invest in. The team who has the largest amount of invested capital wins the game. Suggestion: We recommend for the Game Master to diversify his capital if pos- sible and invest in every competiting team to balance their capital and make them both winners. It will create a positive ending of the game. But it will be a good idea if one team will receive a little bit more than the other alternatively will receive the whole amount. 9) Don`t forget to discuss and evaluate the results! Feedback is very important. Please discuss with all participants what and how the game has evolved including comments how to improve the game.
