Factors in Creating a Bus Run

  • Number of bus stops
  • Location of bus stops
  • Length of the run
  • Number of students

5

slide-6
SLIDE 6

Factors in Creating a Bus Route

  • Attendance zones
  • Window of operation
  • Length of school day
  • Number of buses for each tier

6

slide-7
SLIDE 7

Attendance Zones

  • High school attendance

zones are the largest

7

slide-8
SLIDE 8

Attendance Zones

  • Middle school attendance

zones vary

8

slide-9
SLIDE 9

Attendance Zones

  • Elementary school

attendance zones are the smallest

9

slide-10
SLIDE 10

Window of Operation

  • The amount of time between the first trip and the last
  • This would be from the first bell time to bell time of the last tier
  • This applies to both morning and afternoon runs
  • Can reduce the need for buses and school bus operators by

lengthening the window of operation

10

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Student Length of Day

  • High Schools: 7 hours
  • Middle Schools: 6 hours 27 minutes
  • Elementary Schools: 6 hours 15 minutes

 17 elementary schools have an extra hour for reading instruction as required by legislation

Current Number of Runs Per Tier

12

First tier (HS) 730 runs Second tier (ES) 674 runs Third tier (MS) 602 runs Fourth tier (Alternative School) 56 runs

Process to Create Models

  • Models designed for operational efficiency
  • Current routing software used to generate models
  • Added proposed start times in database within routing

software to run models

  • Any programs based at specific schools and/or sites
  • Special needs’ buses requiring unique equipment

13

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Factors to Consider for Each Model

  • Ninth grade centers will need to start 10 minutes earlier due to

shuttles to/from the main campus

  • Special schools where the start time cannot be flexible
  • Half-day Pre-K Vocational Education programs
  • ESE high school transition programs
  • Technical College campus start times and shuttles from high schools

 For Technical Colleges, any changes also affect non K-12 attendees

Lessons Learned by Other Districts for Implementation

  • Provide ample time to promote and obtain feedback
  • Engage all stakeholders to include parents, students, school staff

(Teaching/Learning and Operations), and community partners

  • Review costs of implementing and recurring costs
  • Review the ability to provide consistent transportation services
