The Atlantic Salmon Trust Putting Wild Salmon First Moray Firth Tracking Project 2019 Update
Moray Firth Tracking Project Recap • What is the problem? • What is the plan? • What can it achieve?
The Problem
The Plan • Largest European salmon tracking project • Tag 850 smolts in the headwaters of 7 rivers • Place 358 acoustic receivers in rivers, estuaries and 3 x marine arrays • Monitors Smolts over 100 miles & as they migrate seawards • Building on individual river projects to create a Regional project
What Will it Achieve? • Year 1 Understand where fish are going missing • Identify mortality pinch points through fresh water & coastal zone • Year 2 Close in on the Likely Suspects • Assist in developing management solutions • Identify areas that require future research

Summary of Findings • Freshwater Higher number going missing than expected • Coastal Lower numbers going missing than expected • Next steps Identify why the smolts are going missing • Taking action
