On May 29th the Plastic Soup Foundation introduced the Life+ Mermaids project at the

pening of the New World Campus in The Hague. The event gathered thirty companies and

400 visitors. The New World Campus is an institution that looks for global and innovative solutions from an international perspective, by means of bringing together professionals from different disciplines. The Plastic Soup Lab, a project part of the Plastic Soup Foundation, focuses on looking for solutions for the main sources of plastic soup. They aim to look for answers and alternatives for these four central issues: ghost fishing nets, microfibers from washing machines, tires and the project Plastic Urban Mining, which focuses on the waste problem in developing

countries. Therefore, the Lab believes microplastics from synthetic fibres are one of the

main sources of plastic soup. Daniel Poolen, head of the Plastic Soup Lab, gave a lecture about the plastic issue and introduced the Life+ Mermaids project to the audience. He emphasized the need to find a solution to the release of micro and/or nano plastic particles from textile washing processes and the main causes of this issue. Poolen also talked about the importance of implementing innovative technologies and additives to laundry processes and textile finishing treatments. During the event, the Plastic Soup Foundation arranged a display where the Life+ Mermaids project was presented. An informative poster explained the problem of plastic in washing processes, the goal and actions of the Mermaids project as well as facts about plastics in clothing to create awareness among the public who attended the event. A basket with 100% polyester blankets sought to raise awareness about how certain fabrics can be damaging to the environment.
