URBAN FOREST STRATEGY Planting within Drainage Reserves

  • To date we have successfully beautified

some of our sumps where room is available and an integration with public open space (park land and natural areas)

– Tomato Lake – Centenary Park Lake – Willow Park Lake – Smythe Lake – Norlin Park – Noble Park

Sumps

  • There are a lot of constraints with beautifying
  • ur residential sized sumps and sumps in

some commercial areas

– The large sites with enough room for planting are managed by the Water Corporation – Those which belong to the City are generally small offering limited space

  • Minimal space within the lot – drainage purposes

– Sites are not irrigated and not easily accessible if we were to maintain low native planting – sites are currently grassed and mowed

So what are we left with? Sumps

TA6

SLIDE 5

We can plant trees around the sumps to create more canopy and improve the aesthetics. And this will assist our Urban Forest Strategy initial target!

“to replace lost canopy to a coverage which meets and exceeds that of the baseline year of 2001”

Sumps

TA7

  • Sumps are not the easiest sites to work

with

– Drainage function will take precedence – Maintenance for drainage function will take precedence - access needs to be maintained – People don’t like “blind spots” in these sites

  • Passive surveillance needs to be retained

More Trees in Sumps?

To identify where we can plant we first identify were we can’t plant. More Trees in Sumps?

Can’t Plant Here?

  • By default we can’t

plant into the wet area

  • f the site – the

sump/basin

TA10

slide-9
SLIDE 9

Can’t Plant Here?

  • The fence line needs

to be maintained so that future canopy does not come into conflict with the neighbouring property

TA11

slide-10
SLIDE 10

Can’t Plant Here?

  • Our Crime Prevention

section recommends a minimum 2.5m gap between the canopy and the ground to assist with retaining sightlines

TA12

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Can’t Plant Here?

  • Plus other constraints

need to be considered for the management of the tree

– Power lines – Lighting – Access to drainage infrastructure

TA13

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Plan for room?

  • If we want the best canopy we need to

plan for the future size of the canopy and provide room for that canopy

  • In order to do this the City’s Arborist will

choose the best species of tree for each site

  • Neighbouring residents will be

consulted prior to planting

How many trees?

  • We have identified 9 sites
  • We plan on planting 46 trees
  • And we gain an estimated 3,611 m2

canopy at maturity

We gain canopy

  • Selby Park and Sump at Greenshields

Way

– 13 trees providing an estimated 1,021 m2 when mature

  • Severin Walk Planting in Winter 2015

– 11 trees providing an estimated 864 m2 when mature

Current Work

  • Leadership and Governance

– Presentation to the Landscape Industries Association (WA) and Nursery & Garden Industry (WA) joint State Conference – Article for Parks Leisure Australia on our Urban Forest Strategy – Internal UFS Working group meetings – Signatory to the 202020 Vision (20% more green space by 2020)

TA21

SLIDE 20

Current Work

  • Asset Retention and Management

– 100 street trees ordered for winter planting

  • Awareness, Participation and Capacity

Building

– ‘Our Trees’ logo developed – Infograph being developed by Marketforce – Dedicated Belmont Connect page

New Opportunities

  • Research, Best Practice and Adaptive

Management

– Inventory of street trees (life expectancy, health, species etc.) – in progress – Canopy coverage via multispectral aerial imagery (% cover, height, vigour) – investigating – Summer Thermal Imagery – mapping the urban heat island effect - investigating
