The first large LNG vessel

Viking Line’s new vessel is the first vessel on the Baltic Sea – and the first large passenger vessel in the world – that is powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) *. It is unique among passenger vessels of this size in having LNG as a fuel alternative. In practical terms, the gas is cooled to minus 162 degrees Celsius, transforming it into liquid form and it shrinks 1/600 when it goes from gas to liquid form

slide-27
SLIDE 27

The LNG tanks are located outdoors

  • n the rear deck.

If the gas comes into contact with air it rises, since it is lighter. It is thus ventilated away. In cooled form, the pressure in the tank and piping system is very

  • low. The pipes and double-mantled. This means that

no gas is emitted in case of any leakage.
