Concrete Rose
by Angie Thomas
From the international phenomenon Angie Thomas comes a hard-hitting return to Garden Heights with the story of Maverick Carter, Starr’s father, set seventeen years before the events of the award-winning The Hate U Give.
The son of a drug king, seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter is negotiating life in Garden Heights as he balances school, slinging dope, and working two jobs while his dad is in prison. He’s got it all under control – until, that is, Mav finds out he’s a father. Suddenly he has a baby, Seven, who depends on him for everything. Loyalty, revenge and responsibility threaten to tear Mav apart, especially after the brutal murder of a loved one. So when Mav is offered the chance to go straight, it's an opportunity – in a world where he’s expected to amount to nothing – to prove he’s different and figure out for himself what it really means to be a man.
A poignant and searing exploration of Black boyhood and manhood from the critically acclaimed and bestselling author, revisiting Garden Heights by focusing
- n Maverick's origins as he becomes a father.
Angie has over 114k followers on Twitter and 107k on Instagram. She is committed to engaging with her readers through events at schools, libraries, art centres and more. The Hate U Give has been on the New York Times bestseller list for over 160 weeks and has sold 143k copies in the UK TCM. It has received numerous accolades, including the Carnegie CILIP Honour Award, and is now a major motion picture, starring Amandla Stenberg. Angie's second novel, On the Come Up, has sold over 22k copies in the UK TCM. Film rights have been sold to Fox 2000. "Angie Thomas is an African American woman who proves that blacks stories not

On the Come Up
by Angie Thomas
The highly anticipated second novel from one of the literary voices of a generation. Waterstones Children's Book Prize-winning author New York Times #1 bestselling author
The award-winning author of The Hate U Give returns with a powerful story about hip hop, freedom of speech and fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you. Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill. But when her first song goes viral for all the wrong reasons, Bri finds herself at the centre of controversy and portrayed by the media as more menace than MC. And with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it – she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be.
Inspired by Angie’s mom losing her job when Angie was a teenager, On the Come Up sheds light on child poverty in the US. Angie says: “Kids like Bri, who are facing homelessness and poverty, become statistics and numbers. Their stories are never told… I want to give those kids more books to see themselves in.” On the Come Up also draws on Angie’s experiences as a teen rapper. She says, “It takes us right back to Garden Heights post Khalil. Buildings are burned, and a struggling community is left in the ashes. Hip hop was birthed from similar conditions in the Bronx … [when] young people used their creativity to make themselves heard and so created one of the most influential cultures of modern history.” The Hate U Give has been on the New York Times bestseller list since publication. It was also #1 on Amazon UK, and it has received numerous accolades, including winning the Waterstones Children's Book Prize and the British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year. It is shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. It was named a New York Times Editors' Choice and a Teen Vogue Book of the Year. It was also voted one of Time Magazine's books of the year. The movie adaptation releases in Australia in January 2019.

Wolf dreams of tasty sheep—sheep sandwiches, sheep sushi, sheep tacos! Queen Celine
by Matt Shanks illustrated by Matt Shanks
A funny, eco-friendly, politically-relevant picture book by super-talent Matt Shanks.
Celine Beaufort was an ordinary girl. She did ordinary things, On ordinary days, In ordinary ways. But every now and then, Celine was a Queen, Of a kingdom by the sea. Celine Beaufort is queen of what she is quite certain is the most beautiful rock pool in the world. It's perfect. And to make sure nothing ever changes, she decides to build a wall around it. Unfortunately, that turns out to be a royal mistake. As self-proclaimed ruler, it's up to Celine to right her wrong and restore her rock pool to its former glory, this time with everyone welcome.
Perfect for fans of Oliver Jeffers, Andrea Beaty, and David Roberts, this is a humorous, kid-friendly read with a strong environmental message, delivered in a non-didactic way. Not only is the environmental message here timely; the discussion of inclusion-- and taking down walls--certainly reflects the current political dialogue. Matt Shanks is a talent to watch. He illustrated Jackie French's Koala Bare, and has been on the CBCA Notables list for his own books and books he has illustrated.
Matt Shanks was born in Sydney and now resides in Melbourne. Sandwiched between the bush and beach, the inspiration for his

Love from Alfie McPoonst, The Best Dog Ever
by Dawn McNiff illustrated by Patricia Metola
Dear Izzy, I’m a Sky Dog now. I live in Dog Heaven, because I died...
When Alfie the dog dies, he sends his owner Izzy letters in the post from his new address: The Nicest Cloud, Dog Heaven, The Sky. He wants her to know that he misses her – so much! – but his new home in heaven is BRILLIANT. There are postmen to chase, angels to tickle his tummy, and he never even has to take a bath! Can his letters comfort Izzy, who is is feeling lost without him? Sensitively balancing humour and raw emotional truth, this is a beautifully observed tale sure to reassure children experiencing loss and grief for the very first time.
A reassuring book to help young children make sense of their first experience of loss and grief. A rare epistolary picture book. Told through the therapeutic act of letter-writing, the story encourages children to express their loss creatively – by writing a story, drawing a picture or even sending a letter. The Good Hawk (Shadow Skye, Book One)
by Joseph Elliott
A rich fantasy adventure trilogy, full of warring clans, deadly shadows and devastating plagues...
If everything was taken from you, what would you do to get it back? Agatha patrols the sea wall with pride, despite those in her clan who question her right to be there, because of the condition she was born with. Jaime is a reluctant Angler, full of self-doubt and afraid of the sea. When disaster strikes, the pair must embark on a terrifying journey to a land where forgotten magic and dark secrets lurk in every shadow... Thrilling and dark, yet rich with humour and compassion, this novel marks the debut of a wonderful new voice in fantasy and a welcome new kind of protagonist - perfect for fans of The Girl of Ink and Stars, Garth Nix and Michelle Paver.
The first in an epic new fantasy adventure trilogy aimed at young teens. The Good Hawk aligns most closely with Michelle Paver’s internationally acclaimed and bestselling Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series, which is set in a pre-agricultural Stone Age Europe. It is also perfect for fans of Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom series (Sabriel etc.), Christopher Paolini's Eragon and Kiran Millwood Hargrave's The Girl of Ink and Stars. Protagonist Agatha has Down's syndrome in a world where her condition is unnamed, making her an unusual and much-needed fantasy protagonist. Set in a pseudo-Britain of warring clans, this book draws on the enthralling world
- f Norse myths and the magic of ancient legends.

Join Ashala Wolf, Ember Crow, and Georgie Spider as they use their powers to resist an oppressive government, protect their tribe of outcasts and the sentient forest that hides them, and race to save the world in this sharply written dystopia woven with Kwaymullina's own Aboriginal heritage. They’re known as Firestarters. Boomers. Skychangers. The government calls them Illegals — children with inexplicable abilities — and detains them in menacing facilities so that society is kept
- ut of harm’s way. Ashala Wolf and her Tribe of fellow Illegals have taken refuge in the Firstwood, a
forest eerily conscious of its inhabitants, where they do their best to survive and where they are free to practice their abilities. As the world shifts around the Tribe, Ashala Wolf and her allies fight to protect those they love in a thrilling new dystopian world. Author Ambelin Kwaymullina draws inspiration from the people, lands, and history of her native Australia to deliver a powerful saga about respect for others and the earth.
'If an "exhilirating dystopia" strikes you as oxymoronic, this vivid, original debut just might change your mind.' - Kirkus Reviews Written by an Indigenous Australian author who mines her own culture to explore contemporary and historical perspective on race, culture, and the environment. This exciting Australian YA trilogy is now available in a beautifully published boxset.
Ambelin Kwaymullina loves reading sci-fi and fantasy and has wanted to write a novel since she was six years old. She comes
from the Palyku people of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. When not reading or writing, she teaches law, illustrates books, and hangs out with her dogs. She lives in Australia.

Otherwood

“Stuey’s story will set imaginations spinning with possibilities about other worlds, ancient sins, and the power of truth.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Hatred combined with lies and secrets can break the world.” Grandpa Zach used to say that before he died, but Stuey never really knew what he meant. It was kind of like how he used to talk about quantum physics or how he used to say ghosts haunted their
- vergrown golf course. But then one day, after Stuey and his best friend, Elly Rose, spend countless afternoons in the deadfall in the
middle of the woods, something totally unbelievable happens. As Stuey and Elly Rose struggle to come to grips with their lives after that reality-splitting moment, all the things Grandpa Zach used to say start to make a lot more sense. A 2019 Edgar Award Winner, this is a book about memory, loss, and the destructive nature of secrets, but also about the way friendship, truth, and perseverance have the ability to sew a torn-apart world back together.
Otherwood received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews, and was a 2019 Edgar Award winner Master world-builder Pete Hautman has created a wholly accessible and engaging sort of fantasy for middle-grade readers Now in paperback this gripping story is, at once, a crime story, a coming of age tale, and a fantasy about parallel worlds with a wholly satisfying ending
Pete Hautman is the author of many books for young adults and adults, including the National Book Award–winning Godless, the
