Building a simple schedule
English = 1 credit + Math = 2 credits + Science= 3 credits + History= 4 credits + PE/Wellness= 4.5 credits + Health/Wellness= 5.0 credits + World Language= 6.0 credits + Music Ensemble= 7.0 credits

More schedule math
■ If you are in a music ensemble and have
enrolled in a World Language course, you have reached 7 credits.
■ If you do not participate in a music
ensemble or academic support, you need to select electives
■ PowerSchool will update your credit total
for you as you make requests
Course Levels and Placement
■ More classes are grouped by ability level in 9th
Grade than at Gibbons
■ Levels 2, 3 and 4 are available in English, Math,
and Science
■ All students take Grade 9 History at Level 3 ■ Teachers will make recommendations ■ Core academics ■ Electives
Placement Criteria
Many classes and levels have placement
- criteria. For example,
■ English 9 L3: C or better in Grade 8 English, B- or lower on grade 8 writing portfolio, and recommendation of Grade 8 English teacher

Regarding course placement:
■ Your 8th grade
teachers have been meeting with you to discuss your placement
■ Your placement is
based on your current performance
■ Talk to your teacher if
you are interested in working to change your placement - recommendations can be changed by 6/1
■ Math and World
Language placement tests occur over the summer
Courses that are prerequisites
■ What is a prerequisite? ■ For example, Web Design L3: Successful completion of Exploring Computer Science I ■ Examples of classes that fulfill pre-requisites:
■ Exploring Computer Science I (CS130) ■ 2D Art (FA102) and 3D Art (FA103) ■ Food Foundations (FCS130)

■ Log into PowerSchool ■ Click on Class Registration ■ Follow the instructions on the screen to
request your courses

Important Dates
✓March 13-26: GMS Teachers enter course recommendations ✓March 16 and 19: WHS administration meets with 8th grade teams at GMS ✓March 26: PowerSchool open for entering course requests ✓April 2: Extended homeroom to finalize requests ✓June 1: Deadline for course recommendations to be updated ✓ July: Schedules made available in PowerSchool ✓August 22: Freshman Orientation
