Why does MVHFH build their houses to be visitable?

  • We understand and appreciate the

importance of building houses that meet the current and potential future needs of

  • ur homeowners, their families, and

their visitors.

  • On some of our houses, visitability is a

grant requirement.

  • Since 2018, 100% of our new builds

(whether required or not) have conformed to the City of T

  • ledo

visitability ordinance.

Our Visitability Experience – No Step Entrance

  • We installed an entry door that has an “ADA sill”.
  • We provided a ramped concrete sidewalk from driveway to front porch

Changes

  • Minimal

Issues / Solutions

  • Ramped sidewalk was raised higher than before and made final grade a

little more difficult. Solved by installing elevated flower beds where sidewalk meets front porch.

  • Snow may make “ADA sill” door difficult to open. Our house design

incorporates a covered entrance.

What is Universal Design?

  • Center for Universal Design: “the design of products and

environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design”.

slide-28

We build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.

Why does MVHFH incorporate Universal Design into their houses?

  • We view the visitability requirements as

a minimum list of accessibility features we should incorporate into our houses.

  • Universal Design features are added

whenever practical.

Our Visitability and Universal Design Experience – Summary

  • When starting at the house-design stage, visitability can be

achieved for very little additional cost

  • Existing house designs may be easily changeable to

accommodate visitability requirements.

  • Some Universal Design elements can be added for little or no

cost
