What is SUDS design? PAUL DAVIES What is SUDS design? What is SUDS design? What is SUDS design? What is SUDS design? SUDS design What is SUDS design? Why do people think its new? What does it look like? How do we design one?

SUDS design

  • What is SUDS design?
  • Why do people think it’s new?
  • What does it look like?
  • How do we design one?
  • What is different?

What is SUDS design?

Conceptually: It is not a way of doing something It is a way of thinking Practically: It is trying to not undue what is already working ‘if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it’ And retrofitting is trying to make it work like it did before we interfered with it.

What is SUDS design?

You will see many documents and presentations with images similar to the ones

  • n the right

But this is simply to show the conceptual philosophy behind SUDS It is not realistic to expect that we can turn back time And although living in a tent may be a fun holiday in summer, not many people want to do it all year round

slide-10
SLIDE 10

Why do people think it’s new?

  • It is perceived that SUDS is a new discipline, but the basic science behind

the concept is ancient.

  • Hydrology and hydraulics have been around for a long time and some of the

concepts have been around for thousands of years.

Remains of a Dam at Wadi Garawi south of Helwan; that dates to the 4th dynasty 2600 BC.

Why do people think it’s new?

There is evidence of a piped rainwater harvesting systems in Knossos, Crete dated as pre 1500B.C. The hanging gardens of Babylon was probably the first documented green roof (570B.C.), but it was not really very sustainable by today's standards, but the ‘sod roof’ was known to be used by the Vikings. There are some brick lined soakaways still around from the 1700s, but soakaway were found along Adrian’s wall dating back to 122A.D.

Why do people think it’s new?

SUDS Manual 2007 Marcus Vitruvius Pollio 30BC “The only new concept within SUDS is that Holistic design is the right way forward”

What do SUDS look like?

This development in York Covers more than 20 hectares And the whole of the surface water drainage system is ‘on the surface’

The architect tried some interesting variations across the site…

With varying degrees of success! (the footpath is a porous resin bound gravel)

What do SUDS look like?

A Village!

(or at least a community)

slide-22
SLIDE 22

How do we design one? Like any good story Start at the beginning at work towards the end In other words, start at the top and work your way progressively down the system

What is different?

  • Try to understand what is happening on the site in its pre-

developed state, before you start to look at the design

  • Consider water as a resource not a waste product
  • Instead of the drainage system serving the site, the site is the

drainage system

  • Think about how the site will be drained during construction,

because the drainage system will be the last thing that is constructed

  • Special Health and safety considerations for SUDS
  • There are no special H&S considerations for SUDS that do not

exist in everyday life
