What’s New in Physical Education in Illinois...

Enhanced P.E. Task Force - Illinois State Board of Education

“Physical Education correlates directly to the health and well-being of students for the rest of their lives and has cognitive benefits, making students more receptive to learning. There is a significant body of research showing that children who are more physically active perform better in class and

  • n standardized tests. Improving opportunities for physical activity is an imperative for improving
  • ur children’s academic achievement and their health. P.E. and physical activity during the school

day leads to better learners, better behavior in the classroom, and better student health.”

ISBE Required Fitness Assessments for Grades 3 - 12

○ Beginning Spring 2017, Districts must assess using Fitness Gram ○ Aerobic Capacity (Pacer Test), Flexibility (Sit and Reach Test), Muscular Endurance (Curl-up Test), Muscular Strength (Push-up Test) ○ Assessment results reported to ISBE for Grades 5, 7, and 10 (monitor progress of students in achieving and maintaining health-enhancing level of physical fitness)
