  • Lack of healthcare in all areas of Parkinson’s –

1200 neurologists for 1.2 billion population of India, high treatment costs, fear of side effects no cure for Parkinson’s

  • “Total lack of awareness about Parkinson’s” – superstitious

beliefs, faith in alternative forms of treatment.

  • Leading to large number of people living with Parkinson’s remain

undiagnosed and untreated, especially in rural and lower social economic areas.

  • PDMDS developed a model of care that began in

Mumbai, but is now being spread even into rural, tribal, slum and the lowest stratas of society

Kenya – Foundation has an awareness raising campaign, to address stigma, increase the numbers of people diagnosed and registered with Parkinson’s and give homecarers more knowledge to improve care given at home.

  • Establishing a Movement Disorders Clinic in Lagos, Nigeria. –

Campaigning at World Health Organisation to address the limitations in the WHO Essential Drugs List for Parkinson’s ,

  • utreach and education work at local and government level,

tackle financial barriers including implementing a medicines donation scheme

  • Predictions are that Parkinson’s populations are set to rise in

African countries.

Reaching Hispanic communities in the USA. – The Muhammed Ali Parkinson’s centre Phoenix.

  • Around 2,000,000 Hispanics in Arizona- 1/3 of the population
  • People in this community can be economically and socially
  • disadvantaged. Many do not speak English
  • The Muhammed Ali Centre provides education, exercise,

mutual support and therapeutic activities but was not reaching this community.

  • The Promotores programme was developed involving Hispanic

people living with Parkinson’s and aims to provide

  • pportunities in culturally appropriate ways.
