Course Routes

  • At KS4 students are able to complete either the

Combined Science Trilogy (2 grades) or Triple Biology, Chemistry and Physics (3 grades) routes. These routes are based on the option choices your child has selected and their progression in Science.

  • 10J & 10K = Triple Route
  • 10L, 10M & 10N = Double Route

Independent Learning

  • Quality - Exam practice - known as exit tickets, ‘Flip learning’ Pupils

homework prepares them for the following lesson e.g. Tassomai, quizlet, pre-reading, calculation practice, assessment, key word definitions, key word dictionary, condensing notes to 1 page.

  • Homework: Access to next lesson is limited if homework is not

completed and pupils will be asked to complete it in same-day detention

Ambition Growth Fellowship Scholarship

slide-32
SLIDE 32

Success in Science

  • Scientific literacy – reading science for pleasure e.g. New Scientist,

Focus, online

  • Working scientifically – engaging with feedback on practical work,

taking it seriously

  • Revision – developing a range of techniques, taking advice from

those with experience

  • Exam technique – responding to all assessment feedback,

practicing past exam questions in y11

Success in Mathematics

  • Equipment – scientific calculator and full maths set.
  • Mathematical fluency – including application without structure.
  • Perseverance – moving from confusion to the ‘lightbulb’ moment.
  • Ongoing and collaborative revision – start now! Students can revise

alone or work through problems together, to develop confidence in challenging topics.

  • Analysis of errors – students learn best from making mistakes and

asking questions to correct them.

Ambition Growth Fellowship Scholarship

slide-41
SLIDE 41

Support from parents/carers

  • Check in on students regularly to ensure they have completed

homework - use Show My Homework to help you.

  • Ensure students make use of MathsWatch independently.
  • Look out for communication on upcoming assessments.
  • If students are saying they don’t understand, encourage them to

see their teacher.

  • Try to put aside your own feelings about Mathematics.

Revision guides: BEWARE

Revision guides must be written for the NEW specification as there are many new topics, including:

  • Rates of change
  • Kinematics and its application
  • Iteration
  • Venn diagrams and set notation

Some topics in old revision guides are also no longer relevant.

Title: Question 2: Language features - word analysis.

It is imperative that your child does not miss a lesson. ‘Every Lesson Counts!’ Missing out on a lesson = Missing out on practicing a particular question/skill.

Ambition Growth Fellowship Scholarship

slide-47
SLIDE 47

Independent Learning

  • Thursday lessons will depend on independent learning (completing

work independently, at home, before the lesson):

  • Reading
  • Exam Practice
  • Quizlet

As your child is now working towards their GCSEs, the demand on them to work independently will dramatically increase.
