Alvord Lake - Stanyan across from Haight St. William Alvord (1833 - 1904) - merchant, banker, 14th Mayor (1871-1873) Supporter of the development of Golden Gate Park. Artificial “lakelet” financed by Alvord in 1882, improved in 1894.

Alvord Tunnel - 1889 Oldest standing tunnel in Golden Gate Park

First poured-in-place concrete construction using rebar technique.

Awarded recognition as a National Historic Civil Engineer Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Recently undone major retrofitting.
