Positives
u
all 3 senior men’s teams were sustained, performed well and became closely integrated (performance included in team reports)
u
the large investment in senior rugby this season paid dividends on the pitch and in results
u
investment in physios and their performance improved player availability and recovery
u
started close interaction with RFU on coaching courses (Activate Warm Up, Rugby Transition Workshop) and Bath University on Injury Management (5 games professionally filmed as part of RFU RugbySafe commitment)
Challenges
u
the development squad concept using 1XV/2XV/3XV/Academy players for both cup competitions had limited support (compared to other clubs who took both the concept and the competitions seriously)
u
the DoR role currently remains narrow compared to roles at other clubs and needs to be formalised (scope, responsibilities)
u
managing todays challenges (CV19) with key changes for next season at the club (personnel, promotion, new teams, finance)
Thank You’s
u
for making the pitches look amazing and the fantastic management of the training pitches
u
for the support in pushing the club forward and understanding the demands from the rugby playing side of the club
u
for the step change in investment in game/training equipment, transport, coaching expenses
u
all the coaches, supporting team volunteers and club supporters for making the (shortened) season such a success on and off the field
Playing Season
u
without question, Buckingham’s most successful season to date - a long campaign even though it was cut short
u
we equalled the previous numbers of wins record (with 4 games to play and could have won all)
u
squad is without doubt the healthiest it has ever been in all competitions
u
results were: 12 Wins, 10 Losses, won 2 pre-season friendlies
Positives
u
thank you to the Committee for supporting use of both new changing rooms and moving away side to old changing rooms – I have seen, first hand, the mind games teams play when we travel away!
u
reducing barriers to playing was essential this season and the physios have made a huge impact
u
we found our USP early on and we did it well (lineout, scrums, full game focus, home support)
Challenges
u
captaincy change and loss of Euan early in season was difficult and low point but we had great support including Jamie Temple stepping in
u
the connection with the academy this season was not what I hoped for and concerns remain on the development of players progressing to senior rugby
u
player availability and commitment is not great at times and difficult to understand – we continue to compete against all sorts of distraction and need to continue improving in all areas (I know David Toone is looking at this and I just hope we jump on board)
STATS Numbers Used 44 Left 4 Season Ending Injury 2 Debuts 11 Academy 1 Uni 2 Player of 1 game 10
Playing Season
u
mixed season for the Mitres with a definite divide between home and away performances with the expected success of home fixtures and the frustration of availability and performances and associated results with away
Positives
u
finished 3rd overall in the Wadsworth Berks/Bucks & Oxon 2 North league behind Banbury IIs and Henley IIIs, at the time of the premature end to the season with 8 wins and 8 losses and a +65 points difference with 4 games remaining
u
every fixture for the season was fulfilled (Henly 3’s still went ahead as a friendly even though conceding the points due to a shortage of players
u
good relationship maintained with both the 1st squad and the Cavaliers resulting in the 2s being represented by 82 players from a combination of Club, Buckingham University and Guest players as well as work placement students from schools within the local catchment plus representation from the academy for the Bucks Cup
Challenges
u
early and frustrating exits from the Bucks Cup and Lewis Shield again due to availability of players Thank you to Gouty, Tom, and Steve for their support particularly Steve for helping me rally around players late
Playing Season
u
season started well with a new captain secured and a bank of committed players from within the club, Winslow and the
u
mixed results before Christmas left the team at mid/low table but some really good wins
u
appetite for having a 3rd team still remains strong but needs committed leadership next season and good support from the whole club.
Positives
u
particular highlight was our game against Aylesbury 3’s, played at Winslow Rugby Club – it was well supported, RTFU representatives came to support and funded beers/match teas in the Nags head including ‘Stash’ for the Man of the Match and great community spirit on the day
u
despite cancelling two games due to lack of players, a side was fielded for all other league games before COVID19 ended the season
u
a number of younger players played for 3XV this season, either as a stepping stone to senior rugby, returning back from Uni or previously played for the club
Challenges
u
difficult after Christmas to field a team each week, relying on available 2’s players to strengthen numbers and enable the game to be played
u
unfortunately, due to some issues that could not be resolved, the captain stepped down in January – no replacement captain came forward
u
players for the 2’s and 3’s teams - this needs addressing next season as a priority
u
Steve Weingart is stepping down from Head Coach next season but will continue to fill the role until a replacement is
A personal thank you to Graham Kemp for his support to the team and working closely with me during the season
17W, and 2L. The two close losses were to the highest ranking teams in the Division above so the real story is the consistency and dedication of the players.
Defence is key - 9 games we kept the opposition under 10 points, 4 clean sheet games!
Final of the Oceanic Cup and the Play Off Final against Div2 (Blue) when the season

represented the Seniors. Jack Robb played for both the 1st XV (vs Beaconsfield – scoring a try on his debut) and 2nd XV, and Owen Davies played for the 2nd XV.
Everyone worked incredibly hard to create a “one team” ethos and the results this year have shown how successful this was.
is a planned transition to the new coaching team.
work and guidance this year - their legacy of a strong vibrant Academy with a great bunch of talented players speaks for itself.
A disjointed season, with Cup & festivals dominating the fixtures pre-Christmas and county dominating post-Xmas, followed of course by lockdown Numbers: Started with 23, lost 2, gained 1, finished on 22. Next season – 6 leavers (Y13s) + 2 known leavers (other reasons) + 8 19/20 U15s moving up to U18s. Start on 22. From 20/21 RFU likely to change girls age bands to U12/U14/U16/U18, which will impact Academy numbers (currently 3 years (U16/17/18). Squad size will be cut by approximately 1/3. Will be challenging to fulfil fixtures. Cup: Came 2nd in pool to ONs, who got through to SF in National Cup! (never finished due to C19 but had a good chance of winning) Ordinarily we would have progressed to knock out but for RFU dates cock-up, so were switched into Plate. Progressed in Plate to beat Ellingham & Ringwood in Semi-Final – Final was due to be played in April – CANCELLED! – The furthest we had progressed so far… disappointing! Festivals: Bucks Cup – Clear winners, 2nd year running! Towcester X7s – 2 teams entered, one team came 2nd, narrowly losing to ONs in the final,, the other team came 4th, losing to ONs2 in their final game. Fabulous day, great rugby. RAF Halton – Great performance, but tough opposition at the start meant little progression. Individual Progression:
11 in county – + 2 didn’t take up places Saracens CofE – Shaniah, Tami, Tallulah & Daisy Wasps CofE – Alys & Ella England TDG – Shaniah
u
Buckingham Swans had another strong season, winning Championship Midlands 2. The ladies fulfilled all league fixtures with 11 wins and 3 losses.
u
The squad continues to grow with a mixture of players across age and experience levels. It is an ongoing challenge to get all players a fair amount of game time with only 1 team.
u
At the end of the season Swans gained a further 2 coaches which has enhanced training and development opportunities. This also will enable the transition to running 2 teams.
u
The team continues to develop and improve, making huge steps forward in skill level. Across the season 37 players have been played in league fixtures.
u
Swans would like to thank Mikey Clark and Ronnie Speakman for all their efforts as our coaches this season. They put in a huge amount of time and effort to help us improve and reach our potential.
u
Also thank you to Rowan Cooke for taking on the role of Swans Physio, your help and expertise made a real difference. We hope you will continue with us next year.
u
Mikey Clark also works tirelessly to obtain sponsorship and support for the Swans.
u
Swans again have seen higher volumes of support, which has boosted the ladies’ moral and encouraged potential new players
u
I am proud to have been able to lead out the Swans each week, lucky enough to generally be making the winners speech at the end. After my 3rd season as Captain of the Swans I have decided to step down.
u
Moving forward Swans will have 2 teams and therefore we have voted in a ladies Club Captain, this has gone to Jayne Webster for the 2020/21 season. Jayne will have 4 vice captains to support, Sophie Ryder, Josie Murray, Steph Cregan and Nicola Lepper.
u
Mikey Clark and Ronnie Speakman will be staying as coaches for another year, they will be joined by Mike Speakman and George Speakman. Swans will also be utilising Jamie Warr as a strength and conditioning coach during pre-season.
u
Swans will have 2 teams next year but are still awaiting RFU confirmation of which leagues they will be in. First team is expected to be in Championship 1 North.
u
Swans will be working a lot closer with the Girls Academy moving forward to create a clear rugby pathway for girls as they transition to the women’s game.

u
Only 4 Safeguarding concerns were raised during the 2019/2020 season.
u 3 were dealt with at local level u 1 reported to area safeguard lead.
u
Future focus for 2020/21 need to recruit a volunteer from the mini section and from the girls section as assistant safeguarding officers.
u
This season has been a quiet year on facilities improvements:
u
Further improvements and simplifications to the clubhouse audio visual set up were required. Thanks to Tim Titley for assisting here.
u
Repairs to the Shop unit and the Tractor Shed were carried out and an extra small training space at top of P4 was created.
u
As usual we also invested heavily, around £20K, in summer (2019) pitch maintenance – vertidraining all pitches, including Maids Moreton PF and applying many tons of sand. We continue to invest far more than most clubs in maintaining our pitches and have far more maintenance kit at our disposal than other clubs our size. Thanks to Julian Cook, Mark Payne and the Waterboys who man to irrigation rota.
u
Future investment in our facilities:
u
The Moreton Road housing development phase 3 planning application has been resubmitted by Bellway, and we have confirmed our strong interest in the two pitches that are included in this application should it be approved. These should be Sport England specification pitches, with floodlights, located on the left hand side
u
As is well known the RFU are suffering financial constraints, even before Covid 19 struck, and have cut back totally on club development grants and loans, unless required to support failing clubs.
u
The club’s greatest need is for more pitch space for Sundays and for midweek
pitches we have.
u
Consequently, the Committee have determined that all significant facility improvements will be ‘on hold’ until we see the outcome of the above planning
rooms etc. It does not make sense to invest our own funds on an ad hoc basis, whilst this opportunity is on our doorstep, even though it may be 2 – 3 years before any funds came our way.
u
u
Social and Fundraising :
u
The 9th annual Beer Festival continued the success of previous years’ fund raising. The team led by Matt Harper, Simon Smith and Pat Ockendon continued to tweak the format to retain freshness, and raised around £16,000. The key feature of our BF remains the musical content arranged by Ian Hewitt.
u
The Summer Ball was managed by Jamie Temple and was a social success. Unfortunately electrical power problems on the night gave the team a lot of problems. Additional expenditure was incurred, which contributed to a loss on the Ball, but the power resolutions should stand us in good stead in future.
u
The two VP lunches we managed to get in, the Sponsors lunch, the Supporters Christmas Lunch all ran successfully. Unfortuntely the Ladies Lunch and the final VP Lunch were cancelled. Thanks here to Sally Hodges and Will Landon who continue to fine tune the organisation of our
u
Harper Woods Christmas charity tournament again raised significant funds (£3K) for various charities and was a major source of fund raising for the club itself.
u
The Minis Festival was once again very successful, best run in the County
u
The refurbished clubhouse is increasing in popularity for function hires and thanks to Julie Nichols for managing these.
u
u
Volunteering:
u
As usual particular thanks are due to the non Committee members who support the senior club with their efforts. To the Swans for managing the bar on Lunch days, to Tony Hawkins for keeping the 1st xv playing statistics, to Sally Hodges for selling the match programmes and organizing the match report rota, to her ever eager band of reporters, to Steve Glendinning for his match photographs, to George Gulliver for running touch.
u
We recognised our volunteers this year with the County trip to Wasps awarded to Mikey Cook and Callum Hall of the Swans coaching team
