Implementing Rapid Transit in San Antonio

DRAFT EXAMPLE – subject to change

  • North & South Central connects Brooks to Mission

San Jose, to Downtown and north to San Antonio College, North Star Mall, Airport, and Stone Oak

  • North-West connects UTSA Main campus to UTSA

Downtown campus

  • East-West Central connects Loop 410 West,

General McMullen to Downtown, AT&T Center and Loop 410 East

  • Northeast connects downtown to the Pearl, Witte

Museum, Incarnate Word University, along Austin Highway to Randolph Park & Ride and the I-35 corridor

  • South East Primo connections from Downtown

along New Braunfels to Brooks

  • Near-West Primo connections to Texas A&M

How is Rapid Transit Different from a Bus system?

Light Rail – Minneapolis, MN Bus Rapid Transit – Belo Horizonte, BR “Trackless Train” – Zhuzhou, CN

rapid transit: public transit service that is able to move quickly on every trip in its own lane, separate from other traffic.

How does Rapid Transit fit into the roadway?

Bus Rapid Transit – Mexico City DF

Rapid Transit Station Sidewalk Sidewalk

Crosswalks

Rapid Transit lanes would be separated from cars and Rapid Transit stations separated from sidewalks.

Prior to Project Development “FAST indicates that New Starts project sponsors must complete the Project Development (PD) phase within two years, which may be challenging for proposed projects that have significant environmental impacts, complicated financial arrangements, or complex engineering and design elements. Therefore, FTA encourages project sponsors to perform whatever work they feel is necessary prior to requesting entry into PD to facilitate their ability to complete PD for a proposed New Starts project within the two- year timeframe.”
