The purpose of the consultation exercise

• To explore how AMELIA can be used as a

consultation tool with people who are socially excluded.

• To ensure that the assumptions embedded in

AMELIA reflect the views and behaviour of such people.

• A series of group discussions with groups of people

– Older people – People with disabilities – Children – Young people

• The example of St Albans with a group of people with

disabilities and older people

Discussion about barriers to movement in specific situations

• Crossing the road
• Moving along the pavement, including going up and down hills
• Making a bus journey, including getting to and from the bus

stop

• Making a rail journey, including travelling to and from the

railway station

• Making a taxi journey
• Making a car journey, including using the car park

Activity 3

Views on some actions the council could take

• Removing obstacles from the pavement
• Better street lighting
• Reducing street crime
• Providing more pedestrian crossings
• Providing more seats
• Providing more public conveniences
• Providing more dropped kerbs at pedestrian crossings
• Providing better bus services (greater frequency, at weekends,

etc).

Some imaginary journeys

• From the Civic Centre to

– The Abbey, going to the main entrance on the south side – City station – The City Hospital

• Using GIS maps linked with photos and a portable

interactive projection system

– Allows the use of different layers of information at different scales – Users can interact with the map using GIS functions – User comments captured using a digital pen and stored as GIS layers
