• Dr. Mok Theavy is the first plastic surgeon in Cambodia. He received his medical

doctorate in 1990 from the University of Health Sciences, Phnom Penh. Since then he has worked in the general surgery department at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital. I n 1994 he was among ten doctors chosen for specialized six years surgical training with I nter-University Ghent-Phnom Penh, which included a

• ne-year fellowship for head and neck plastic surgery in Ghent, Belgium. I n

2009, Dr. Theavy was the first recipient of the I nternational Observer Fellowship awarded by the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons. He spent four weeks

• bserving pediatric plastic surgery, craniofacial and upper limb trauma, and

microsurgery in four Edmonton hospitals.

• Dr. Theavy has participated in plastic surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, and

laser trainings in Belgium, Australia, the Netherlands, Singapore, Canada, and the United States.

Since 2002 Dr. Theavy has served as Medical Director of Smile Cambodia. As a Medical Director, he works with the Cambodian government and regional hospitals to plan and undertake medical missions and education programs. I n addition to providing services for thousands of patients, the missions are instrumental in providing valuable training for Cambodian medical professionals. I n 2003, Dr. Theavy was featured in a documentary produced by USC’s Annenberg Center that chronicled Smile Cam bodia’s efforts in Cambodia, and received the Medical Visionary Award for his efforts with Smile Cambodia.

• Dr. Theavy is committed to education and training of Cambodian medical

professionals well beyond his role at Smile Cambodia. He is a professor of surgery at I nternational University and the University of Health Sciences and Puthisastra University. He has organized numerous surgical trainings at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital, in collaboration with NGOs and professors of surgery from around the world. These trainings provide Cambodian surgeons and medical staff with invaluable experience as well as foster a spirit of international

• cooperation. Dr. Theavy has presented his work at many scientific conferences.

I n recognition of his efforts to build the surgical profession, Dr. Theavy was appointed to be a committee member of Cambodian Society of Surgery in 2002. Since 2006, he collaborated with medical team from American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery Society “Face to Face” to conduct first microtia surgery and training mission at Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital. I n 2007, he was awarded the Royal Government of Cambodia’s Gold Medal of Work for his efforts to develop human resources in Cam bodia through teaching. I n addition, he was also awarded the Bronze Medal in 2009 for his collaborative projects with international NGOs and medical professionals and the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital. Since 2009, Dr. Theavy began working with the Rotary Club Likas Bay and Lu Chou conducting missions in Cambodia at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital.

• Dr. Theavy maintains a close relationship resulting in missions held several times

including Siem Reap, Kampot, Calmette Hospital, and Smile Center in Phnom

• Penh. I n 2014, Dr. Theavy has assembled medical professionals of plastic

reconstructive surgeons and established Cam bodian Society

Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery. He also started the first Plastic Residency Program at University of Health Sciences with the approval from Ministry of

• Health. Currently, Dr. Theavy is a deputy director of Khmer-Soviet Friendship

Hospital and a board of committee Phnom Penh Medical council and Cambodian Medical council.

Surgical Options for Facial Malignant Skin Tumors by Using the Local Flaps Theavy Mok

ABSTRACT

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Cambodia. Many patients don’t know about how this defect is growing, as a result, numbers of patients came to the hospital for the reconstruction when the defect developed at a high level. There are numerous treatment options to skin cancer patients, depending on the location of the tumor and how far the cancer has spread. Among all treatment methods, surgical excisions are the most convenience way to treat patients a larger cancerous area on the skin, or spread in the body, all the defects may require local flaps. Basal cell carcinoma common with potential for local recurrence and high- risk features. Surgical excision of tumors may create a defect that is difficult to restore, however reconstructing the defects with proper flaps can improve quality of life and prolong survival. There are numerous flaps that have been designed to provide coverage of a variety of the specific defects. Actually at Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital, Department of Pediatric Plastic Reconstructive Surgery the using local flap is a popular choice because it can removes those skins cells that have been impacted by the cancer to cover the defects following tumors excision. We describe our experience by using of different local flaps after tumor resection which significantly increases the quality of life in patients by providing better cosmetic and functional outcome.
